Obama?s health care act is being embraced by small business owners who believe it will actually cut the cost of providing health insurance to employees.
As the health care fight continues at the Supreme Court, not all small business owners believe the new health care law will stifle their growth.
Some small firms are embracing health care reform, saying they expect it to cut the cost of providing health coverage to workers, CNNMoney reports.
?This is all about leveling the playing field so small businesses get a fair shake, so we can effectively compete against larger companies,? Mike Roach, co-owner of Paloma Clothing in Portland, Ore., told CNNMoney.
Roach is a member of the National Federation of Independent Business, the trade group that has vehemently criticized President Obama?s health care legislation and has helped push the case to the Supreme Court, the report says. Howeve, Roach is also a member of the American Small Business Majority, which has come out against the idea that health reform will stifle small business growth and job creation.
Paloma Clothing is one of the 5.2 million firms in America with less than 20 workers?a group that include 90% of small companies, CNNMoney says. These firms will be unaffected by the most controversial aspect of health care reform: the requirement that companies of 50 or more employees either provide insurance or pay fines.
The reform law will give Roach and his employees access to more affordable health care plans, he told CNNMoney. Roach also stands to benefit from a tax credit in the legislation that will be allotted to firms providing health coverage to their employees.
Anthony Serianni, president of Omicron Biochemicals in South Bend, Ind., currently offers his employees extra salary so they can pay up to 65% of their own insurance costs, CNNMoney says. Health care reform could decrease the cost of coverage per employee, and reduce his company?s payroll. ?John McDermott
