Slain NM family remembered during crowded service

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? The waves of emotion brought tears, laughs and prayerful reflection Friday as more than 2,000 people gathered to remember five members of a New Mexico family gunned down in their home last weekend.

Following a police escort, fellow chaplains and members of the Albuquerque Fire Department lined the procession for the memorial service held at one of the city's largest churches. Bagpipes played and the urns of former pastor Greg Griego, his wife Sarah and their three young children were carried into the church.

Family members recalled Greg Griego's lumbering walk, his hearty laugh and his endless commitment to helping others to turn their lives around. His wife, known for her cooking, and their children were just as much a part of that ministry. The family was always a front-row fixture at church services.

The crowd prayed for the Griegos and for their 15-year-old son, Nehemiah, who remains in custody after being charged with the killings.

Annette Griego, one of Greg Griego's adult daughters, told those at the service that her father was a man whose heart was after God.

"My dad never gave up on me. He never gave up on any of us. He never stopped giving us Jesus and so I know he would want us to do the exact same thing for our brother, Nehemiah," she said. "So if you wonder where we stand, we stand alongside our brother."

"We stand confident that God will take this tragedy and use it for something good," she said.

News of the slayings has reverberated throughout the community, where Greg Griego ? a former gang member turned pastor ? was known for his work with jail inmates, his service at local rescue missions and his spiritual guidance for firefighters and members of the military.

Friends said Griego and his teenage son went on missions to Mexico and that the boy was a talented drummer who played with the church's youth band.

On Friday, family, friends and members of the Calvary Albuquerque church who watched the boy grow up continued to struggle, trying to make sense of the tragedy.

Nehemiah Griego was just a normal teen to Vince Harrison, a former police officer who had known the family for about 10 years through his security work at the church.

"He did not fit the criteria of a kid who was crazy into guns and wanted to hurt people. That's absolutely false," Harrison said.

The question of how and why such a tragedy could happen to the Griegos haunts family members and fellow churchgoers as lawmakers across the country debate whether more gun control laws would keep another shooting from happening, even though the signs of brewing tragedy are often impossible to spot.

Public defender Jeff Buckels said in a statement that it's too early for anyone to rush to judgment about the teen's mental state, motives or plans. He accused the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department of parceling out limited bits of information that have led to "sensational headlines that threaten to finish Nehemiah's case in the public mind before it has fairly begun."

Sheriff Dan Houston has said he stands by the facts as presented in the investigation.

Griego is facing murder and child abuse charges in the deaths of his parents and three younger siblings ? all found shot to death inside their rural home south of Albuquerque on Jan. 19.

Detectives were at the home for two days collecting evidence. They also have been reviewing text messages and calls between Griego and his 12-year-old girlfriend and security video from Calvary, where the teen apparently spent much of the day following the early morning shootings.

After the killings, authorities allege that Griego reloaded his parents' two semi-automatic rifles and put them in the family van and planned to gun down Wal-Mart shoppers. Houston has said investigators have no information that Griego actually went to a Wal-Mart that day.

Buckels, the defense attorney, promised he will consult with mental health experts and investigate the effects of violent video games. Authorities have said Griego liked to play "Modern Warfare" and "Grand Theft Auto."

The one-day event is bringing together more than a dozen producers, marketers, entrepreneurs, academics, economists and artists. (AP) ? Before long plane flights, Thomas Schumacher likes to download talks from some of the world's brightest and creative minds speaking at TED conferences, watching them on his iPad while thousands of feet in the air.

"I marvel at the range of stuff. I like the passion of the speakers and love the content," says the president of the Disney Theatrical Group about the various conferences dedicated to technology, entertainment and design. "I am a giant TED freak."

The downloader will become the downloaded after Monday when Schumacher joins more than a dozen speakers for the second TEDxBroadway conference at the off-Broadway complex New World Stages.

The one-day event is bringing together more than a dozen producers, marketers, entrepreneurs, academics, economists and artists. All will try to answer the question: "What is the best Broadway can be?"

Schumacher's string of hits ? including "The Lion King," ''Mary Poppins" and "Newsies" ? hasn't made him impervious to a bout of nerves ahead of the conference.

"I'm confident that somebody will be worse than me, and I'm really confident that people will be better than me," he says, laughing. "There are no rules about doping for this, so I'm going to do whatever I can. I'm going to have a blood transfusion Sunday night."

He'll join a wide assortment of speakers, including "Star Trek" actor George Takei, producer Daryl Roth, Schmackary's Cookies CEO Zachary A. Schmahl, playwright Kristoffer Diaz, critic Terry Teachout, ethnographer Ellen Isaacs and Erin Hoover of Starwood Hotels & Resorts.

There will also be performances, this being Broadway, after all. Magician Steve Cohen will wow the crowd with tricks, and there will be music from Rasputina, the all-female cello-driven band.

TEDx events are independently organized but inspired by the nonprofit group TED, which started in 1984 as a conference dedicated to "ideas worth spreading." Video of the Broadway event will be made available to the public.

The annual gathering centered on Broadway is the brainchild of three men: Ken Davenport, a writer, director, producer and industry pioneer; Jim McCarthy, the CEO of ticket discounter Goldstar; and Damian Bazadona, the founder of Situation Interactive, an online marketing firm.

Last year, the organizers asked speakers to peer into their crystal balls and try to predict what Broadway would look like in 2032. This year, they dropped the forecasting to focus on current issues.

"I think by taking the time frame off of it, we've actually retained the imagination part and kind of liberated the speakers a little bit more," said McCarthy. "I think it's been a more constructive framework for them to work with."

The speakers will include Tony Award-winning set designer Christine Jones, who will discuss how to make the Broadway experience more intimate. She's an expert on the subject, having created Theatre for One, a 4- by-8-foot portable theater that fits just one audience member and one actor.

One returning speaker is Vincent Gassetto, the principal of a high-performing public middle school in a tough area of the Bronx who urged those in attendance last year not to overlook his diverse and enthusiastic talent pool as arts funding shrivels. His passion triggered several school visits to Broadway shows.

One hot topic will be on the future of live theater. David Sabel, from the National Theatre of Great Britain, producer Randi Zuckerberg and Internet pioneer Josh Harris will each talk about how theater can be freed from the stage, whether that means more immersive experiences or employing more broadcasts of plays and musicals on movie screens.

"Our goal at the conference is not necessarily to walk out with a list of things we're going to do tomorrow and say, 'This is going to solve the problem,'" said Bazadona. "The idea is really just to discuss what the different ideas and directions are. For me, the more open-ended it is, the more excited I am to see where it goes."

The three organizers have seen the event grow and hope to keep it an annual event. Last year's TEDxBroadway attracted some 200 people; this year it is expected to double that.

"I think of the conference as a steroid shot to everyone's imagination. It just stirs everyone up," said Davenport. "It's a jolt to everyone's system and gets everyone thinking in a new and exciting way."

Canonical outs project to help Ubuntu smartphones launch with over 10 core apps

Canonical's Ubuntu handsets are expected to be upon us very, very soon, and given that some say a phone is only as good as its apps, the firm wants to make sure the experience is indeed a great one right out of the box. To help accomplish that, Canonical has announced the CoreApps project, setting its sights on about a dozen default applications which should give Ubuntu devices ample functionality from day one; this, of course, includes essential ones such as a calendar, calculator, clock / alarm, weather and email client. That's not it, however, since the project also lists plans for social networking apps like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, as well as an account and file manager, document viewer, RSS reader and even a terminal -- the latter, naturally, should make Android rooters feel right at home. Canonical is seeking help from the community to make the CoreApps project a reality, so those devs interested in helping may want to click the source link below to learn all the nitty-gritty.

Weak growth, inflation delays Bank of Canada rate rise

OTTAWA (Reuters) - The Bank of Canada held its benchmark interest rate at 1 percent on Wednesday, but it revised its guidance dramatically to say that excess capacity in the economy, soft inflation and stabilizing household debt have combined to push any rate increase further away than previously thought.

Governor Mark Carney has been the most hawkish central banker in the Group of Seven (G7) major industrial economies for several months, but he has steadily been watering down his guidance on the need to start raising rates.

"While some modest withdrawal of monetary policy stimulus will likely be required over time, consistent with achieving the 2 percent inflation target, the more muted inflation outlook and the beginnings of a more constructive evolution of imbalances in the household sector suggest that the timing of any such withdrawal is less imminent than previously anticipated," the bank said.

In October and December it said: "Over time, some modest withdrawal of monetary policy stimulus will likely be required, consistent with achieving the 2 percent inflation target."

The Canadian dollar swiftly moved lower and bonds rose.

Carney, set to head the Bank of England in July, was the first in the G7 to raise rates following the global financial crisis. Refraining from further tightening since mid-2010, he began signaling in April the need to start raising rates, but has had to dampen expectations repeatedly.

"The Bank of Canada has made (policy) about as soft as they could, while still maintaining that tightening bias," said Mark Chandler, head of fixed income and currency strategy at RBC Capital Markets.

    RATE CUT?

Desjardins economic strategist Jimmy Jean commented: "The market might interpret this as a prelude to rate cuts."

Carney told a news conference that, while he would not categorically rule out anything, including lower rates, the bank's projections include a gradual reduction in monetary stimulus between now and the end of 2014.

"So the direction is clear, the timing has shifted. The timing of that expectation has shifted for the reasons that ... the bank's governing council has stated," he said, alluding to excess capacity, muted inflation and improvements in the households sector.

"So all those factors together push back the need for any potential adjustment, any potential tightening, but that is still the ultimate direction."

One factor that will help Canada, the bank said, will be the end to temporary disruptions in energy output and an expected reduction in the deep discount faced by Western Canadian crude.

That said, the bank does not expect the economy to hit full capacity until the second half of 2014, not the end of 2013 as it forecast in its October Monetary Policy Report.

This is causing a substantially lower inflation profile. Total inflation is expected in the near term to remain around 1 percent, the bottom of the target range of 1 to 3 percent. For the first time since 2009, the bank projects inflation to be below that band in the first quarter. It said total and core inflation should return to its 2 percent target in the second half of next year, not the end of this year as it once thought.

Overnight index swaps, which trade based on expectations for the central bank's key policy rate, showed that after the announcement traders saw less than a 25 percent chance of a rate increase in late 2013.

The Canadian dollar fell below parity with the U.S. dollar briefly after the bank's statement, dropping to C$1.0005, or 99.95 U.S. cents, from C$0.9930, or $1.0070, beforehand. It was the weakest since November 19.

A Reuters poll of Canada's 12 primary dealers on Wednesday found the median forecast is for the next rate hike to be in the first quarter of 2014. Two dealers pushed back their targets; others said their forecast was under review.

The bank said the economy likely grew by only 1 percent, annualized, in the fourth quarter of last year versus initial expectations of 2.5 percent growth.

It also forecast a weak start to 2013, but said growth will gather momentum throughout the year as business investment and exports strengthen and temporary energy sector disruptions end. Annual growth in 2013 should be 1.9 percent, compared with the previous 2.2 percent forecast, it said.

Dizzying household credit growth and a hot housing market have been a top concern of both Carney and Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, but the bank's language on Wednesday signaled the belief that the situation was getting under control.

The bank expects household credit growth to moderate further and the debt-to-income ratio to stabilize near current levels. It painted a mixed picture of the housing market itself, with residential investment seen declining from historically high levels, but home building still higher than demographic demand.

It said it still saw over building and "stretched" valuations in some segments, despite softening house prices.

Carney said the immediacy of the possible need for higher rates to curb the housing sector was reduced.

However, the bank does list potential housing resurgence as one of three upside risks.

"It's been a 10-year build-up, and it's too early to declare success," said Senior Deputy Governor Tiff Macklem, a possible successor to Carney.

Less tau reduces seizures and sudden death in severe epilepsy

Jan. 22, 2013 ? Deleting or reducing expression of a gene that carries the code for tau, a protein associated with Alzheimer's disease, can prevent seizures in a severe type of epilepsy linked to sudden death, said researchers at Baylor College of Medicine and the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., in a report in the current issue of the Journal of Neuroscience.

A growing understanding of the link between epilepsy and some forms of inherited Alzheimer's disease led to the finding that could point the way toward new drugs for seizure disorders said Dr. Jeffrey Noebels, professor of neurology at BCM, and director of the Blue Bird Circle Developmental Neurogenetics Laboratory.

In her research, Jerrah Holth, a graduate student in molecular and human genetics at BCM who was working with mice with the severe form of epilepsy in Noebel's laboratory, deleted the gene for tau. She found that reducing or eliminating tau also prevented the seizures in a severe form of epilepsy that has been associated with sudden death and reduced deaths in the animals.

In an earlier experiment, Noebels, in collaboration with Dr. Lennart Mucke at the Gladstone Research Laboratory at the University of California San Francisco, found that mice who carried a human gene that leads to accumulation of the beta amyloid protein and the amyloid plaques that accumulate in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease, also had epileptic seizures arising in the hippocampus, the region of the brain associated with memory storage and retrieval.

"This led to the paradigm-shifting hypothesis that excessive neuronal network activity, rather than too little, may contribute to lower cognitive performance and dementia in some forms of Alzheimer's disease. When this happens, the progression of memory loss may accelerate," said Noebels.

The finding also demonstrated the two disorders may share defects in signaling within brain memory circuits.

The two labs went on to show that deleting the second gene for tau ameliorated both cognitive losses and seizures in the mice whose inherited disorder mimicked Alzheimer's disease found in humans.

Holth's finding demonstrates that tau is involved in a far broader range of epilepsy than previously suspected, said Noebels. The type of epilepsy she studied resulted from an inherited potassium ion channel defect that affects the flow of the potassium in and out of nerve cells. She found that removing the gene encoding Tau not only dramatically reduced seizures, but prevented the mice from dying early, which typically happens in these animals.

"Even a partial reduction of the amount of tau protein by 50 percent was highly effective," said Holth. Her finding suggests developing new drugs that lower the normal interactions of the tau protein may reduce seizures and sudden unexpected death for persons with intractable epilepsies, a problem in nearly one-third of the 5 million Americans with this disorder.

Currently, Noebels and his colleagues in the Blue Bird Laboratory are studying whether the loss of tau can correct a seizure disorder once it is already established. If these studies prove fruitful, "the pharmacological discovery programs under development for treatment of Alzheimer's disease may one day find their way to the epilepsy clinic," said Noebels.

Biden meets with Democrats, stoking 2016 chatter

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Joe Biden in 2016? The inauguration is barely over but the vice president already is dropping plenty of hints that he might have another political act.

Biden packed his schedule with events and receptions attended by party stalwarts throughout the long weekend of inauguration festivities, stoking speculation he may be laying the groundwork to carry the torch from President Barack Obama. It comes after Biden played a prominent role in brokering a compromise on the fiscal cliff standoff with Congress and his work developing gun violence legislation following December's deadly school shooting in Connecticut.

The next presidential campaign is a long way off and the Democratic primary chase will be dotted with plenty of "ifs," most notably whether outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton decides to seek the nomination. Clinton, the former New York senator and first lady, remains the heavy favorite among party activists but several notable Democrats, including Biden, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, are said to be keeping their options open in case Clinton decides not to run again.

As vice president, Biden can stay in the spotlight and is no stranger to the demands of a presidential campaign after failed bids in 1988 and 2008. The former Delaware senator has racked up a long list of domestic and foreign policy achievements even as his occasional off-script moments have become fodder for Republicans.

"There's a whole lot of reasons why I wouldn't run," Biden, who will be nearly 74 on Election Day in 2016, told CNN in an interview before the inauguration. "I don't have to make that decision for a while. In the meantime, there's one thing I know I have to do, no matter what I do. I have to help this president move this country to the next stage."

Yet with his high-profile perch, Biden is doing nothing to tamp down the speculation.

Biden's private swearing-in ceremony on Sunday was attended by recently elected New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan, someone who would be a potent ally in the state's first-in-the-nation primary. Attendees at a Sunday afternoon reception at the vice president's residence at the Naval Observatory said they noticed a lot of party activists from early voting states like New Hampshire, Iowa and South Carolina.

"We can always start the political calculations in terms of the number of delegates needed to secure a nomination. But let's just say I see a number of superdelegates here as well," Democratic strategist Donna Brazile told reporters following the ceremony.

Biden later dropped by the Iowa State Society Inaugural Ball, slipping up and telling partygoers he was "proud to be president of the United States," prompting cheers. He quickly corrected himself, saying he was "proud to be vice president of the United States, but I am prouder to be ... President Barack Obama's vice president." Laughing it off, he said, "There's goes that."

During the weekend, Biden attended a ball at the Kennedy Center celebrating the party's Latino voters, who turned into a powerful voting bloc in November's election. Biden called the Latino community "a decisive factor" in the election. "This is your moment," Biden said. "America owes you." Some party stalwarts said it was noteworthy that Biden asked Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina justice, to administer the oath of office.

Biden also attended a ball honoring environmentalists, sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation and other environmental groups, where he said the Obama administration was committed to confronting climate change. "I don't intend to let these four years go by without getting a hell of a lot done," on the environment, Biden said.

On Inauguration Day, Biden and his wife, Jill, walked part of the parade route, waving to the cheering crowds in a made-for-TV moment. At one point, the vice president even jogged across Pennsylvania Avenue to shake hands with "Today" show weatherman Al Roker.

"It seems obvious that he's going to keep that option open for himself and do the right things," said Mike Gronstal, the Democratic leader of the Iowa state Senate who attended the reception. Gronstal said Biden actively worked the room, thanking supporters for their help during the 2012 campaign. "It was very personal time," he said.

On Tuesday afternoon, Biden met with members of the Democratic National Committee at a private reception after a DNC meeting, where delegates unanimously re-elected Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz to another term as chairman. A frequently played campaign theme song, REO Speedwagon's "Roll with the Changes," could be heard from outside the room and attendees said Biden thanked them for their work during the campaign and offered an upbeat assessment of the second term.

If Clinton decides not to run, Biden could draw upon good will from party activists, an ability to connect with regular folks and extensive campaigning in key states like Iowa, New Hampshire, Florida and Ohio. But he would also need to deal with personal poll numbers that rank below Obama's and a propensity to commit foot-in-mouth moments in an era where political gaffes can quickly sink a campaign.

New Hampshire state Sen. Martha Fuller Clark, who was among the attendees at Biden's Sunday reception, said it was "early to read into" Biden's interest in 2016. But he said there was "huge support" in the key primary state.

"He's deeply admired and loved in New Hampshire," Clark said. "Clearly Joe Biden occupies a key place in our hearts."

What I learned yesterday from the Lowe's Installed Sales Associate ...

I unhinged the door in our extra bedroom this weekend to move my son?s bed there. In the process, I wrecked said door.?Yesterday, I visited the local Lowe?s store to buy a replacement.

For the record, I?m not terribly handy and I?d rather have a root canal than take on a home improvement project. No, I am not kidding about this preference.

William Blake must have been referring to home improvement projects in his reference to ?doors? and ?infinite.?

Here?s the conversation between the Lowe?s Installed Sales Associate and me. Notice how wonderfully she followed the sales process:

    • Asking questions to understand my situation and needs
    • Educating me on the steps to replace a door,
    • Providing me an easy choice to purchase their services instead of tackling this ?simple? project on my own.
    • Allowing me to make an informed choice based on a clear cost/benefit account

(The conversation is paraphrased, though it?s pretty darn close.)

Me: Where are your interior doors?

Jennifer (the Lowes Installed Sales Associate): Right over here. What size did you need?

    Me:?32? by 80?

Jennifer: Hmmm?. That?s an odd size (looking at the pre-framed doors.) Usually they are 32? by 82?.

Me: Well the opening is 80?. I just need the door, not the door and the frame.

Jennifer: Generally it?s easier to replace the door and the frame because the door is pre-hinged. When you buy just the door, you need to line up the door hinges and drill the holes to install it. If that?s not done correctly, you can end up with extra holes in your door.

    Me: How hard is that?

Jennifer: If you?re handy, it?s pretty easy.

Me: I have molding around the doorway. If I bought the door with the frame, would I need to remove the molding?

Jennifer: Yes, but you should be able to salvage it.

Me: Well I just painted the room though. I?m not sure I want to muck with removing and replacing the molding.

Jennifer: One option to consider is the Lowe?s Installment Plan. For $199, we send out a craftsman to pre-measure the door opening. You purchase the door and fixtures and the installer delivers the door, assembles and installs it.

    Me: How does that work?

Jennifer: You pay $45 today and we?ll have an installer come out and pre-measure your door. Once he?s done, you purchase your door and set an installation appointment which is usually just a day or two out.

Me: So I pay $45 for the premeasurement plus $199 for the installation?

Jennifer: Even better. Because you only need the door installed without the frame, the installation is only $169 instead of $199, and we deduct the $45 premeasurement fee from installation fee. This also includes a one-year guarantee on the installation.

Me: How long does the installation take?

Jennifer: For a professional, it takes about an hour to an hour and a half.

Me?(Knowing that one hour of professional time is at least eight hours of my time?): Okay, let me call my wife and see what she says.

Jennifer: No problem. Let me give you a card. I?m here until 6pm today and tomorrow from 10am to 7pm. If you give me a call back today, the installer will receive the premeasurement order first thing in the morning and they?ll likely give you a call before the end of the day to set up the appointment and get started.

I?m calling Jennifer back today at 10:01am on the dot. I would called last night, but got caught up with dinner and it was past 6:00pm before I realized it. Thank you Jennifer. I?ll happily pay $169 to save myself 8+ hours of frustration and insurance that the door is installed correctly.

It doesn't take much to make a functional and attractive workspace. While this example features Steelcase Leap chairs (a reader favorite) and Frame One desks, similar workspaces can be achieved with other furniture as well. The trick is keeping things clean, organized, and well-arranged. Other than that, you don't have to do much to have a great little office.

5 ways to save money on family holidays | mumsdotravel: a family ...

campfire on national trust working holiday at stackpole, wales

30% of us can?t afford to go on a one-week holiday, according to a new UK?report? from the Office for National Statistics.

This makes me sad, especially for families with school-age children. The travel industry?s?school holiday price hikes combined with the economic downturn and the clampdown on parents taking kids out of school during term time mean that a trip away is out of the question for many. But there are ways to have a holiday without paying out for expensive accommodation ? although you still have to get there, obviously. Some of the most enjoyable family travel experiences we?ve had over the years have been some of the cheapest ? camping by the beach is the youngest?s all-time favourite trip, closely followed by the time he helped build a campfire on a working holiday in Wales.? Here are some money-saving ideas for family holidays.

    Camping

You need a decent sized car for this, but if you have your own tent and equipment (which you can use again and again) all you have to pay for is pitch rental and the cost of getting there. Our favourite site when the kids were younger was?Aloha Serignan Plage which is right next to a sandy beach on France?s Mediterranean coast. The site has swimming pools, water slides, tennis, bike hire and even fridge hire when we went.

    Working holidays

WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities On Organic Farms)?offers volunteers the chance to work at farms and smallholdings in exchange for food and accommodation. The charity says that some places will take families with children. There?s a joining fee (?20 at the time of writing) which gives you access to details of the host farms involved.

    House swap

There are various house swap websites to help with this, including guardianhomeexchange.co.uk?which costs from ?35 a year to join. We haven?t tried this, but it sounds like a good way of staying somewhere for free while ensuring your own home isn?t standing empty while you?re away.

    Stay with relatives or friends

There?s truth in the saying that ?a change is as good as a rest?. Staying with friends or relatives abroad or in a different part of the country can be great for you and the kids. The local parks, swimming pool and walks will be different to yours and you can return the favour for your hosts when they fancy a change of scene.

    Youth hostels

Many UK youth hostels offer private family rooms, and some even have en-suite bathrooms. Some hostels have restaurants or you can cook your own food in the hostel kitchen, which is great if your kids are fussy eaters.

How do you save money on family holidays?

I?ve lived and worked in Italy and Spain, and now live in rural south-east England with my husband, adoptive and birth children, dog and cat. I loved my work as a social action radio producer at the BBC, where my role was to get people volunteering. I was inspired by the volunteers and charities I worked with, but found it tricky juggling a career with family life, especially as my husband?s work means he?s often abroad for weeks at a time. I?m now a freelance journalist and write for the Financial Times, Guardian, Independent, National Geographic Traveller, Wanderlust, Practical Parenting & Pregnancy, Adoption Today and others. I write about family, travel, adoption, volunteering and parenting, as well as other interesting stuff that comes up, as long as I have the time. This entry was posted in Life in General. 12 Better Business and Personal Marketing Practices for 2013

    2013

As a small business, you will have to respond to these business marketing trends to keep your business relevant in 2013.

As a business owner or manager, the suggested personal marketing practices will prove to be valuable for helping you to better implement them for maximum business marketing benefit.

    Business Marketing Trends and Practices

#1 ? Original Content is Highly Valued

If this wasn?t true, then media outlets would not always be racing to be the first to report the news to achieve the temporary prize of being first. There is no need to race when YOU are the only source.

Google Authorship is evidence that original marketing content ? one of a kind ? a category of one -?will always be more highly prized.

#2 ? Business is Now Personal

The personal perspective that you provide is what makes any type of content marketing original. Repurposing content is accepting mediocrity ? something that places you in a race to the bottom.

#3 ? Customers Want to Make Better Choices

#4 ? Social Media Will Not Fix Anything

If your business is broken social media will amplify that. So, to help you get better, why not consider blogging just for you. It will help you to dig deep and find better solutions for your customers.

    #5 ? Consistency Sets Expectations

How often should you be publishing to your online channels? ?If you make regular contributions, even if that is quarterly, it is better than nothing at all ? and certainly better than anything irregular. Consistency is a mark of professionals.

#6 ? You Have to Love What You Do

I love to blog and it pains me that the gap since my last post is the widest in years. Looking on the bright side, I?ve just completed my first book on social marketing for small business?and that is reward enough for me ? especially if members of my tribe like you find it useful.

    Personal Marketing Practices

    #7 ? Surprise Your Audience

Pay attention to those that nobody pays attention to ? it could be the greatest gift they receive all year.?Buy the person?s lunch in the line with you. Send an anonymous gift.

#8 ? Show up Even When You are Unprepared

We all think that we need to be prepared, and we should be, but sometimes the most amazing days of our lives are those when we improvise from the heart in service to our communities. It?s a wonderful thing.

    #9 ? Face Your fears

Being yourself means facing your fears and doing what you know has to be done if you are to feel the sense of accomplishment that drives your happiness and success. When you do what is uncomfortable you learn things about yourself that help you to better serve your customers.

    #10 ? Love Yourself

Steve Jobs famously said, ?they are no smarter than you are.? ?When you really embrace that concept the fears that hold you back fall away. What?s left is the innate confidence in your own abilities that shines through.

#11 ? Your Work is Never Done

If it were, then you would have nothing to aspire to. Try to view life, and certainly business, as a process ? not a transaction. How can you do more together with your customers? They are probably wondering the same thing. Help them get what they really want.

    #12 ? Show Your gratitude

Believe it or not, being grateful for the contribution of others helps you just as much, if not more than them. When you put that positive energy into the world it helps you realize you are part of something bigger ? an ecosystem that needs your contribution.

Vafa Guluzade: Resumption of military actions between Armenia and Azerbaijan is within interests of Moscow

Resumption of military actions between Armenia and Azerbaijan is within interests of Moscow. Such development of events will destabilize the situation in the region and will influence the economic interests of the West in South Caucasus. This on its turn will have negative impact not only on the direct participants of the conflict but also on Georgia and Countries of Central Asia,? the former advisor to Azerbaijani President, political scientist Vafa Guluzade told Vesti.az news agency.

Touching upon the plans of reinforcing the Caspian fleet with 5 new ships the political scientist noticed that the main goal of reinforcement is the inhibition of advancement of interests of the West in the region. According to Guluzade it threatens the security of Azerbaijan.

Humans debate chimps' sense of fairness

A video from Emory University's Yerkes National Primate Research Center explains how chimpanzees were tested on their preference for fair outcomes when it comes to sharing goodies.

    By Alan Boyle

Primate researchers in Georgia have laid out what they say is the best laboratory evidence yet that chimpanzees have a human-style sense of fairness. Other researchers, however, say the study is flawed ? and they're sticking to their view that fairness may be a uniquely human characteristic.

The debate focuses on a key question about human evolution: How long ago did our ancestors acquire what Abraham Lincoln called the "better angels of our nature"? These angelic traits ??such as altruism, empathy and fairness ??manifest themselves in behaviors that can run counter to our own self-interest.

The latest research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, argues that a sense of fair play may have arisen millions of years ago, before our ancestors split off from the evolutionary line leading to other primates.?The study's principal author, Darby Proctor of Emory University's Yerkes National Primate Research Center in Atlanta, told NBC News that the research "opens up the door for exploring the evolutionary roots of fairness in non-human animals."

"We've concluded that chimpanzees not only get very close to the human sense of fairness, but the animals may actually have exactly the same preferences as our own species," co-author Frans de Waal, director of Emory's Living Links Center, said in a university news release.

However, the Emory group's findings run counter to what other researchers have found in their own experiments over the past few years. One of the researchers behind those earlier studies, Keith Jensen of the University of Manchester, has said "our sense of fairness is a derived trait and may be unique to the human race."

Today, Jensen said he and his colleagues had serious reservations about the latest experiment.?"I was excited to see a replication of our ultimatum game studies, seven years on, but was disappointed by the results," he told NBC News in an email.

    How the experiment was run
The "ultimatum game" is a key concept in all these studies: The concept refers to an arrangement in which one player makes a proposal to another player to split up a reward. For example, a parent may offer six stickers to a little girl, on the condition that she divides the treasure with her brother. A researcher may offer six banana slices to a chimp, on the condition that it divides the goodies with another chimp.

    Emory University

Researchers report that chimpanzees can change their strategy for dividing goodies, based on whether or not the chimps they're sharing with have any say over the deal.

If the shares are totally determined by the little girl, or the first chimp, their offer to the partner tends to be as low as possible. That's what's known as the "dictator game." But if the other partner has the power to veto a deal, it gets more complex. Make too low of an offer, and the partner might reject the proposition out of spite ? even though the result is that no one gets a reward. That's the "ultimatum game."

The Georgia researchers ran a variety of games using tokens that could be traded for either equal or unequal shares of stickers (for 20 human children, ranging in age from 2 to 7) and bananas (for six adult chimpanzees). The researchers found that the results of the game were similar for the two groups.

If the one offering the goodies was in full control of the split, that individual kept the lion's share of the goodies. The results were different if the two partners had to agree on the split, however.?"Humans typically offer generous portions, such as 50 percent of the reward, to their partners, and that's exactly what we recorded in our study with chimpanzees," Proctor said.

How the debate is playing out
Some questions surround the study: The second partner in the ultimatum game always accepted the offer of a split, whether it was equal or unequal. That applied to the kids as well as the chimps. Such behavior might suggest that the recipients would be happy with whatever they got, and didn't care about the fairness of the deal.

In Jensen's eyes, the fact that none of the chimps turned down an unequal split is a "fatal flaw."

"The ultimatum game hinges on the responder," Jensen said. "If the responder didn't understand the option of refusing, I would simply say the study did not work." Similarly, the children involved in the study may have been too young to understand that they could turn down an unfair deal ? something that Proctor and her colleagues admit in their study.

They did report, however, that both the chimps and the children occasionally expressed displeasure about an unequal division. For the kids, it was voiced in complaints such as "You got more than me!" For the chimps, it took the form of spitting water at their selfish partner, or hitting a barrier between their cages.

Proctor and her colleagues cite other studies to back up their claim that chimps are sensitive to unfairness?? such as?anecdotal, non-experimental reports of chimps negotiating over the division of meat, or leafy branches.?But such reports aren't yet rigorous enough to resolve the debate.

Proctor acknowledged that more research will be required to get a firmer grasp on the better angels of a chimpanzee's nature.?"We can't be sure what all was going on between the chimps," Proctor said. "That's something we'd really like to explore in the future ? how much communication is necessary to convey something to another chimp."

More about the better angels of animal nature:

In addition to Proctor and de Waal, the authors of "Chimpanzees Play the Ultimatum Game" include Rebecca Williamson and Sarah Brosnan.

    Nate Marquardt?s beat-up leg (PHOTO)

Tarec Saffiedine took the Strikeforce welterweight belt with a barrage of leg kicks that Nate Marquardt did little to stop. Photographer Esther Lin caught a shot of just how damaging the kicks were to Marquardt's leg. Raise your hand if you thought his leg was going to give out during the fight? Me too. Though it didn't, Marquardt didn't have an answer for the kicks, and his leg ended up looking like that.
