Sandy Brings Political Drawbacks, Opportunities

Hurricane Sandy is injecting a tropical storm-sized dose of volatility into an already unpredictable presidential race, potentially crimping Republican Mitt Romney?s post-debate momentum and President Obama?s much-hyped early-vote operation.

At a minimum, both campaigns will lose early votes from swing states in the path of the storm, a pivotal group that includes Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and New Hampshire. Depending on the hurricane?s impact, which is still being assessed, campaigning in these key states could be curtailed and preparations at local election offices could be disrupted, making it more difficult for voters to get to the polls.

Meanwhile, Obama and Romney are trying to convey the impression that the race is the last thing on their minds. As Obama put it, "The election will take care of itself next week."

In a contest this close, a clumsy response to the hurricane?especially from the White House?could be a deal-breaker. It may also present opportunities.

?Romney doesn?t have the same political opportunities as the president,? said Republican consultant Blaise Hazelwood. ?If this becomes a disaster and the president handles it correctly, there are political opportunities there.? Read more

NATIONAL JOURNAL?S PRESIDENTIAL RACE REPORT

In the History of ?October Surprises,? There?s Nothing Like Hurricane Sandy
[National Journal, 10/30/12] There?s little precedent for a storm of this magnitude making landfall so close to a presidential election, though NJ?s Sophie Quinton offers a list of six surprise events that did shake up an election in the days before voters headed to the polls. In recent years, as elections have become tighter contests, even small shocks can have an outsize effect.?

Romney Campaign Training Poll Watchers To Mislead Voters In Wisconsin
[Think Progress, 10/30/12] Romney?s campaign has been training poll watchers in Wisconsin with highly misleading ? and sometimes false ? information about voters? rights, the liberal group Think Progress reports.

Sandy Unlikely to Prompt Change in Date of the Election
[Wall Street Journal, 10/29/12] States? reliance on voting by electronic machines raises the prospect of a disruption from Sandy, which caused widespread power outages in several states. But Congress is unlikely to take action to set another Election Day unless they see evidence of such a disruption. Far more likely is that individual states and municipalities would lengthen their voting hours.

Poll: Romney, Obama in a Virtual Tie Nationwide?NEW!
[National Journal, 10/30/12] Although Obama is ahead in 12 key battleground states, a new NPR poll shows the race is in a virtual deadlock just a week ahead of Election Day. The last time the poll came out, the morning of the first debate, it showed Obama with a seven-point lead.?

Despite Rain, Columbus Had Busiest Day of Early Voting Yet?
[Washington Post, 10/30/12] Reports indicate that 4,432 people voted Monday in Franklin County. The high vote tally is good news for Democrats, who hold a strong majority in Franklin County and have been heavily pushing early voting in the Buckeye State.?

Storm Throws a Wrench into the Works of Va. Campaigns, Voting Efforts
[Washington Post, 10/29/12] Sandy?s biggest political impact will likely be in Virginia, one of the most hotly contested swing states of the year and the likeliest of those battlegrounds to get smacked by the storm. The central challenge now to officials is how to allow voting to proceed in the event of power loss.

Impact of Hurricane Sandy on Election is Uncertain
[New York Times, 10/29/12] Nate Silver writes that the one certainty of Hurricane Sandy is that a disaster response that seems well managed could help an incumbent, while a botched response (especially if the storm damage is severe) could harm him. Less certain is the storm?s impact on state and national polls. ?

Nate Silver: One-Term Celebrity?
[Politico, 10/30/12] Should Romney win on Nov. 6, it?s difficult to see how people can continue to put faith in the predictions of someone who has never given that candidate anything higher than a 41 percent chance of winning. Silver gives Romney a one-in-four chance just a week from the election, even as the polls have him almost neck-and-neck with the president.

Watch What You Say About FEMA
[National Journal, 10/30/12] NJ?s Fawn Johnson writes that, despite the controversy over Romney?s remarks about FEMA during a primary debate, Obama and the GOP nominee are in pretty close agreement about how federal disaster aid should work. Both want state and local officials to run the show, with FEMA functioning as effectively a big checkbook.

Obama, Romney Have Bypassed Pennsylvania in Advertising War ? Until Now?
[Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 10/30/12] Pennsylvania has not been the key presidential battleground it has been in years past, which is partially reflected in the lack of network TV advertising there. But as polls show the Keystone State leaning ever so slightly away from Obama, the Romney-supporting super PAC Restore Our Future announced a $2 million statewide ad buy.?

Provisional Ballots Could Keep Ohio?s Outcome in Doubt for Days after Election
[Cleveland Plain Dealer, 10/30/12] A wildcard in declaring a winner on Election Night could be thousands of provisional ballots in Ohio, given to voters when their eligibility is in question. Election officials hold the ballots 10 days to determine eligibility.

Electoral Tie Could Bind the Senate
[Roll Call, 10/30/12] An Electoral College tie would vest the responsibility of choosing the country?s leaders squarely in what polls say is one of the least popular institutions in the country: Congress.

Asian-Americans One of Greatest Untapped Voting Blocs this Year
[Las Vegas Sun, 10/30/12] Nevada?s Asian-American community is, in many ways, the state?s best-kept political secret: They are the fastest-growing minority population in the state, now second only to Hispanic-Americans in numbers, and no party has conclusively claimed them. But many feel they are ignored.

Rhetoric Returns to Auto Bailouts
[Columbus Dispatch, 10/30/12] In the final week of this tumultuous election, the Obama administration?s decision in 2009 to funnel $82 billion toward General Motors and Chrysler has emerged as a defining issue in Ohio with its U.S. auto plants in Toledo, Cleveland and suburban Youngstown.

Obama Rebuts Romney?s Jeep, Auto Claims in Ohio
[National Journal, 10/29/12] With many pundits saying neither candidate can win without Ohio, Jeep was the campaign theme of the day on Monday. The Obama campaign released a TV ad challenging Romney?s incorrect implication in his own ad that Chrysler is moving Jeep production from Ohio to China.

How To Improve Your Home: A Short Guide |

Many people, both experienced and new, are looking for information on how to improve their homes. Lots of tutorials, books and guides are available. This article will give you some wonderful advice on how you can do your renovations the correct way.

A kitchen remodel is less expensive if you refinsh existing cabinets. It is possible to paint the baseboards and add new doors and pulls in order to transform them. Plus, you can do this for a fraction of the cost it would take to replace them!

If you decide to make substantial bathroom renovations, think about making your rooms accessible for handicapped individuals. Although you may not need your bathroom to be handicap-friendly now, if you stay in the home when you get older, you may need it to be. Most improvements will add value when it comes time to sell your home.

Always figure out how much a home improvement project is going to cost you before you get started. It goes without saying that the best projects to do are those that have the highest return on investment. Not every project is created equal. You need to make sure you have the right information on different kinds of projects and what will get you the most out the money you spent.

Seek out different kinds of insulation when you?re thinking of redesigning the rooms in your house. You can consider purchasing permeable house wraps, rigid foams or comprehensive wall systems. Research the prices of each type, and determine how much you want to pay.

Add visual interest to your home by using drywall mud to texture walls. It is easy to texture. Just trowel the drywall mud in place and use something like a stiff bristled brush, a sponge, or even a wadded up plastic bag to dab at the drywall mud and add texture.

Vinyl tiles can be a cost effective product for tiling floors if you want something cheaper than stone or ceramic tiles. Not only is vinyl durable and water resistant, it also has an adhesive backing which makes it easy to install. Vinyl flooring comes in two varieties: separate tiles for small areas and large sheets for bigger areas.

Improve the looks of the kitchen or bathroom by installing ceramic tile. You can have unique designs on the tiles, or you can go for a certain solid color that provides a nice chic look. Your home?s look can really improve with these tiles.

You do not have to replace the cabinets in your kitchen in order to make your kitchen look great. A fresh coat of paint can breath new life into your house. There are a myriad of different finishes and stains that you can choose to improve your cabinets with. So, do online research on the various techniques, choose the one that suits you best, and save money while updating your home.

As we have said before, improving your home is a very popular subject because homeowners are always wanting to do it. Many homes have things that can be changed. By integrating the above tips into your research, you can locate all the right information you need to pull off a successful project.

ASC has examples of all phases of construction including replacement windows.

At 6 months, development of children with autism like those without

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

The development of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is much like that of children without ASD at 6 months of age, but differs afterwards. That's the main finding of the largest prospective, longitudinal study to date comparing children with early and later diagnosis of ASD with children without ASD. The study appears in the journal Child Development and has implications for clinical work, public health, and policy.

The study was conducted by researchers at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Aging Brain Center at the Institute for Aging Research and Hebrew SeniorLife at Harvard Medical School.

The study sought to learn more about the patterns of development during the first three years of life in children with and without ASD to better understand how ASD can be detected as early as possible. It is the first prospective study to examine early-onset ASD (by 14 months) and later-onset ASD (after 14 months) over the first three years, pinpointing where development looks the same and where it diverges.

ASD comprises a group of disorders of brain development that affects about 1 in 88 American children.

Researchers looked at 235 primarily White children with and without an older sibling with autism, testing them at regular intervals from ages 6 to 36 months. Using standardized and play-based assessments, they tested children's fine motor skills, understanding of spoken language, and spoken language production skills. They also measured how often the children shared their emotions and initiated communication with others.

The study looked at early development across three groups: children without ASD, children with ASD who were identified by 14 months, and children with ASD identified after 14 months. At 6 months, development within the early- and later-identified ASD groups was comparable to each other and to the non-ASD group. At 14 and 18 months, the early-identified ASD group performed below the later-identified ASD group in many aspects of development. By 24 to 36 months, the two groups showed similar levels of development.

"Results show that ASD has a preclinical phase when detecting it may be difficult," explains Rebecca Landa, director of the Kennedy Krieger Institute's Center for Autism and Related Disorders and the study's lead author. "In some children with ASD, early signs of developmental disruption may not be ASD-specific.

"Routinely administering general developmental screeners, such as the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, should begin in infancy, complemented by ASD-specific screeners by 14 months," suggests Landa. "Screening should be repeated through early childhood. If concerning signs of delay associated with ASD are observed in a child who scores normally on standardized tests, further assessment is warranted."

Grey Parrot Bird Fly | Fly Fishing

Grey Parrot Bird Fly

Parrots are intelligent birds, which can interact effectively when groomed as pets. They make amazing companions as well. They come in diverse sizes depending on the species they belong to.

?

Some parrot species are of small size, like the Parakeets and Lovebirds. Many other species like the Macaws and African Grey parrots are medium sized. A Macaw can be of the size of a Pigeon or up to three feet. African Grey parrots usually grow up to 10-14 inches in length and have a life span of about 60 years. Hence the size of a parrot cage matters a lot when you buy a parrot of a particular species.

?

Parrot cages come in many sizes and you have to make sure that your loving pet stays comfortably in a suitable aviary. Size of the cage door is also a point to think about. The cage door should be big enough to allow your pet to cross the door carefully. Many pet owners tend to keep the cage door open during the daytime and leave the bird to have more room.

?

The exterior look of the bird cage may catch your fancy, but it is of utmost importance to have a spacious interior. Getting a spacious cage interior signifies a lot more freedom for your parrot to stretch its wings now and then or even fly from side to side. Without having a roomy interior your pet bird may feel imprisoned. A frustrated parrot will start throwing tantrums which may lead to behavioral problems slowly. Also a tall bird aviaries can allow your loving pet to wander freely from one perch to another.

?

Buying a roomy, sturdy and durable cage for your pet is not just sufficient. Verify the width of the cage bars. Widely spaced cage bars allow your curious pet to stick his head in and out of the cage easily. Your feathered companion may possibly not like a restrictive habitat with narrowly spaced bars. Sometimes the bored pet can try to wriggle his head through the bars and get stuck. Ensure to buy such a cage where your pet will not get his head trapped.

?

Safety of your parrot should be of prime concern when you want to buy a parrot cage. Parrot aviaries come in many materials and range from cheap to the expensive ones. The stainless steel or wrought iron ones are a good choice. These are scratch resistant and do not cause any harm to your parrot even if he gets into a habit of scratching the cage bars. They give no chance for the parrot to ingest the chemicals or the paint. Painted cages are a big no-no, as they pose the dangers of getting peeled and when ingested by your pet leave it to fall sick.

?

Ensure that your parrot lives in a clean environment. The food tray and water tray should be kept clean at all times. Parrot cages with pull - out trays can be ideal to clean and sanitize. This way you will not disturb your pet also. So acquire a parrot cage which suits his character and size. After all you wish that your pet parrot is not just comfortable but happy too!

Sony goes Redhunting with PMWF55 and PMWF5 pro CineAlta 4K Super 35mm sensor camcorders

Having seen some of its high-end cinema camera thunder stolen by the likes of Red and Arri, Sony has just launched a pair of CineAlta PL-mount cameras with brand new Super 35mm sensors: The PMW-F5 and PMW-F55. Though both pack 4K CMOS imagers, there are some major differences -- the higher-end PMW-F55 has a global shutter, wider color gamut and can capture 4k, 2k or HD video internally, while the PMW-F5 records 2k and HD natively with a rolling shutter (4k requires an optional RAW recorder, as discussed below).

Depending on the level of quality you want, there are several ways to capture video to each camcorder. MPEG-4 H.264 video or Sony's SR MPEG-4 SStP can be recorded onto Sony's new SxS PRO+ media, or if RAW quality is desired, there's the new AXS-R5 Access Memory System for 2K / 4K RAW capture -- which will also work with the current NEX-FS700. Using the latter system, the PMW-F5 is capable of grabbing up to 120fps slow motion RAW HD video, while the PMW-F55 can capture 240fps at 2k, putting it squarely in Epic-X territory. The new camcorders will arrive in February 2013, and while Sony hasn't outed pricing yet, it'll likely be well under the flagship 4k CineAlta F65's formidable $65k sticker. Check the PR after the break to get the entire technical skinny.

Tired Of Being Banished To The Couch? Stop Snoring And Reclaim ...

Snoring can make a person really self-conscious, but in some cases, that may be the least of one?s worries. In some cases, snoring issues can be a sign of a serious health problem. It could be your body letting you know that something is seriously wrong. The tips from this article can help anyone trying to figure out their snoring problems.

Eating dairy products can cause snoring. This is true even for those who are not known to be lactose intolerant. Dairy products stimulate your body to produce more phlegm, which can then fill your nose and throat and make it difficult to breathe. Avoid dairy several hours before bed to see if this makes a difference.

Sleeping pills can contribute to snoring, so you might actually get a better night?s sleep if you avoid them. Sleeping pills cause all of the muscles in your body to relax. The ones that keep your nasal passages open will sag, making the passages narrower. This will cause you to snore.

Snoring can be remedied by sleeping propped upon 2-3 pillows or by sleeping in a position similar to sitting. You keeps nasal drainage from bulking in your nose passages so that they can flow into the lungs. You should not snore at all in this position.

Nasal strips can help you gain snoring relief. These strips have an adhesive on the back that will adhere to the sides of the nose, pulling the nostrils open further. If your nostrils are held open, you won?t snore as much. These strips aren?t recommended for people that also suffer from sleep apnea.

People who are constantly congested because of allergies are a lot more likely to experience snoring while they sleep. When congested, your airways and nasal passages become congested, this may result in air being blocked and you end up snoring. In order to avoid snoring and sleep peacefully, try taking a mild decongestant before you go to bed.

Stay away from cigarettes if you tend to snore. Smoking results in tissues at the rear of the throat being irritated, and swelling can ensue. Swelling in the throat is a leading cause of snoring.

Try eating honey right before bed to help resolve snoring problems. Research has shown that honey can effectively open your airways. This makes it easier for you to breathe. Because of this, you?ll be snoring much less than you used to.

While snoring may be annoying, it also may be a sign of something that is wrong in the health department. Be proactive and consult a doctor should you notice that your body is signaling you through snoring. The tips above can help one find the causes of their condition, and can help them to sleep a bit better

UN Security Council backs plan for Syria truce over holiday weekend, but skepticism prevails

BEIRUT - The U.N. Security Council gave unanimous backing Wednesday to a four-day truce proposed by the international mediator for Syria to mark a major Muslim holiday after he warned that the failure of yet another cease-fire plan would only worsen the fighting.

Yet even this modest effort ? the international community's only plan for scaling back the violence ? appears doomed.

Previous cease-fire missions have failed, in part because neither Syrian President Bashar Assad nor rebels trying to topple him had an incentive to end their bloody war of attrition. Both sides believe they can still make gains on the battlefield even as they are locked in a stalemate, and neither has faith in negotiations on a political transition.

Lakhdar Brahimi, the U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria, has proposed that both sides lay down their arms during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which begins Friday.

The Security Council is normally divided on Syria, but Assad allies Russia and China joined other council members in endorsing the idea of a temporary truce that is meant to pave the way for talks on ending Syria's 19-month-old conflict.

The response on the ground ranged from lukewarm to downright rejection. Syrian government officials said they were still studying the idea, while Syria's political opposition said it was skeptical of the regime's promises. A rebel commander dismissed the plan as irrelevant and a radical Islamist group fighting alongside the rebels said it won't comply with any truce.

As Brahimi briefed the Security Council, the death toll since the start of the conflict in March 2011 crossed the threshold of 35,000, activists said, and more violence was reported across the country.

Two car bombs killed at least eight bus passengers in the capital Damascus and 12 regime soldiers near a military checkpoint in the north, while regime airstrikes on villages near a besieged army base killed 12 civilians, activists said. They also posted a video showing at least 13 bodies laid out Wednesday in a room in a Damascus suburb, some of them women and children. Each side blamed the other for the deaths.

Brahimi told the Security Council by video conference from Cairo that he hopes a truce will allow humanitarian aid to reach war-stricken areas and start transition talks, said U.N. diplomats who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting was private.

However, months of horrific bloodshed and deep distrust between the combatants make it unlikely they will embark on the path outlined by Brahimi. The Syrian opposition says it won't negotiate unless Assad resigns, something the Syrian leader refuses to do.

"The Syrian regime throughout its reign and up until now signs everything but violates everything," Haitham Maleh, a veteran Syrian opposition leader, said after he and others met with Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby in Cairo.

Maleh said there is concern the regime would exploit a cease-fire to take back rebel-held territory. The opposition will not accept any political solution that does not include Assad leaving his post, he said.

Brahimi has served as envoy since September, taking over from former U.N. chief Kofi Annan, who quit after failing to end the Syria fighting. Annan had pushed a six-point plan, including an April 12 cease-fire that was to lead to transition talks but never took hold.

Annan's successor has been blunt about the difficulty of his assignment, trying to lower expectations. He suggested Wednesday that even the holiday truce is a gamble, saying that failure could make the situation in Syria even worse, according to the U.N. diplomat.

Still, the international community has little else to offer. There is no appetite for military intervention, while harsher U.N. action against the regime has been blocked by Russia and China, two Security Council members with veto powers.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said she supports Brahimi's cease-fire so that "Syrians could celebrate in peace."

"We'd like to see the violence come to an end, there's no doubt about this, and we'd like to see a political transition take hold and begin. We've been calling for that for more than a year," she added.

Few of those involved in the conflict appeared ready to commit to a truce.

Abdelbaset Sieda, head of the main opposition group in exile, the Syrian National Council, said rebel fighters would hold their fire during the holiday unless attacked by regime forces. However, his group has no control over rebels fighting on the ground.

Rebel commander Zahran Aloush of the al-Islam brigade outside of Damascus said he's ignoring truce efforts. "How can I expect a cease-fire from a regime that has never given us anything, ever," he said via Skype.

The al-Qaida-linked group Jabhat al-Nusra, which fights with the rebels and has claimed a number of large suicide bombings against regime targets, said it will not lay down arms.

"There will be no truce between us and the prideful regime and shedder of the blood of Muslims," the group said in statement posted on militant websites. "We are not among those who allow the wily to trick us, nor are we ones who will accept to play these filthy games."

In Damascus, Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdessi said the truce proposal was still "being studied" by Syrian army leaders and that Syria's decision would be announced Thursday.

Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters after the Security Council meeting that his country had received indications from Syria it would abide by a cease-fire.

Brahimi hasn't said how compliance would be monitored. Annan's truce plan was more comprehensive, calling for an open-ended truce, a pullback of troops and heavy weapons from urban centres and supervision by U.N. monitors.

In Wednesday's violence, 20 people were found dead in a building in the Damascus suburb of Douma, said local activist Mohammed Saeed, speaking via Skype. The dead included 10 women and four children, he said.

An amateur video posted online showed bodies scattered on the landings of a stairwell and sprawled out on tile floors. Among the bodies were those of two young boys, one with a hole in his head, and a woman. A thick stream of blood flowed from a doorway. Another video showed 13 bodies wrapped in blankets and laid out in two rows.

The videos matched activist descriptions of the event, but because Syria imposes tight restrictions on foreign journalists, their authenticity could not be independently verified.

The state-run news agency SANA quoted the Foreign Ministry as saying that 25 people were killed in Douma on Wednesday and that they were victims of a massacre carried out by "armed terrorists," the regime's term for opposition fighters.

Also Wednesday, Russia's chief military officer said Syrian rebels have acquired portable air defence missiles, including U.S.-made Stinger missiles. In remarks carried by Russian news agencies, Gen. Nikolai Makarov didn't say how many such missiles the rebels had and who supplied them.

A Syrian rebel told The Associated Press in Turkey that the insurgents obtained dozens of shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles, but would not say who provided them.

The Syrian opposition has urged its foreign backers to send heavy weapons, saying rebel fighters cannot break the stalemate as long as Assad can bomb them from the air. However, the Obama administration has refused to do so, saying the weapons might fall into the wrong hands and eventually be used against the U.S. and its allies.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland denied that the U.S. has provided any Stingers to Syrian rebels. She challenged Russia to provide evidence suggesting otherwise.

Gas gets cheaper, but still isn't cheap

(AP) ? Gasoline across the U.S. is cheaper after a week of rapid price declines. But it still isn't cheap.

The national average for a gallon of gas has dropped 13 cents in the past week to $3.625. That's the biggest weekly decline since the 7-day period ended Nov. 28, 2008, according to Oil Price Information Services analyst Fred Rozell.

Falling oil prices, rising supplies of gasoline and a switch by refiners to cheaper winter blends of gas have contributed to lower pump prices.

But gasoline is still more expensive than it's ever been for this time of year. The previous record for Oct. 23 was last year's $3.46 per gallon.

Rozell says gasoline has averaged $3.65 so far this year, 10 cents above the record set in 2011.

Drones and Swarm Bots Working Together Is an Adorable Preview of Mankind's Downfall

Up until now the divide and conquer technique was mankind's best approach to quelling any robot uprisings. But now that self-assembling swarm bots—scary in their own right—are teaming up with eye-in-the-sky drones to tackle tricky obstacles, we're pretty much screwed. More »

Obama, Romney both avoid equating an attack on Israel to an attack on America

Both US presidential contenders, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney pledged to stand with Israel if attacked in their foreign policy debate in Boca Raton, Florida Monday, Oct. 22. But neither replied directly to the question put by moderator Bob Scheiffer: ?which of them would offer a formal declaration as president to treat an attack on Israel as though it was an attack on America, especially in relation to a nuclear Iran?
Romney said: "if Israel is attacked, we will have their back." He added he would stop a nuclear-capable - not just a nuclear ? Iran. Both candidates agreed that military action was a last resort against Iran after all others had been exhausted. Obama said: ?I will stand with Israel if they are attacked" and will not let Iran get a nuclear weapon, but added that Romney seems willing to take "premature military action." He cited unprecedented military and intelligence cooperation between his administration and Israel, and pledged an ?unbreakable bond? with America?s true ally.

debkafile: The reservations on the parts of both candidates reflect the erosion of Israel?s strategic position in the four years of the Obama presidency compared with Iran?s rising clout in the region.

When the moderator asked how they would react to a telephone call from the Israeli prime minister announcing that bombers were on the way to attack Iran, Romney replied that his relations with Israel would be such that that phone call would not be made. Obama did not reply.

While Romney said tough sanctions against Iran should have come earlier, Obama stressed that his first priority had been to round up a world coalition to make them effective. Romney wanted action against Iran to include an economic boycott and isolation, tighter sanctions and getting Ahmadinejad?indicted before the international court for promoting genocide by saying Israel should be wiped off the map.

Romney attacked the president?s record by saying, ?We?re four years closer to a nuclear Iran,? and have seen a dramatic reversal of the Arab Spring, with the Middle East in the grip of violent turbulence and extremism and?al Qaeda is nowhere near on the run. Iran sees weakness where it expected strength. He charged Obama was silent when students in Tehran demonstrated for democracy. But he refrained from taking on Obama directly over his response to the attack which killed the US ambassador in Benghazi.

Reverting to relations with Israel, Romney called the tension between the US and Israel, our most important Middle East ally, ?very unfortunate.? He pointed out that when Obama went to the Middle East, he traveled?to Cairo and skipped Israel, which he has never visited as president. Obama countered that as a candidate he did go to Israel and visited Yad Vashem and the towns blasted by Hamas rockets rather then attending fundraisers.
Romney praised Mr. Obama for ordering the killing of Osama bin Laden but added, "We can't kill our way out of this mess." ??
He hammered the point throughout that the president had failed to show the world strong American leadership. Obama countered by accusing his rival of ?wrong and reckless? proposals and ?being all over the map? in his judgments between the start of his campaign and now. ?

When asked to name the greatest security threat to the United States today, Obama replied ?terrorism;??Romney, ?nuclear Iran.?
For the American voter, 15 days before the presidential election, foreign policy is of secondary interest compared with the economy and jobs.??

Aspirin may slow the decline in mental capacity among elderly patients

Monday, October 22, 2012

A daily dose of acetylsalicylic acid equivalent to a fourth of an aspirin may slow the decline in intellectual capacity among elderly individuals with high cardiovascular risk. This is shown in a study by Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, over a five year period studied how intellectual capacity changes among 681 elderly women (70 to 92 years) with heightened risk of suffering from a heart attack, vascular spasm or stroke.

Of the 681 women, 129 received a low daily dose of acetylsalicylic acid, equivalent to a fourth of an aspirin, to prevent heart disease. The Gothenburg study shows that acetylsalicylic acid also slowed decline in brain capacity among the elderly women.

In the study, published in British Medical Journal Open, the women underwent various tests to measure their physical health and intellectual capacity, such as language and memory tests.

"At the end of the five year examination period mental capacity had declined among all the women and the portion that suffered from dementia was equally large in the entire group. However, the decline in brain capacity was significantly less and occurred at a slower pace among the women who received acetylsalicylic acid," says Silke Kern, researcher at Sahlgrenska Academy.

The effect remained even when age, genetic factors and use of anti-inflammatory drugs were taken into account.

In addition to preventing heart disease, acetylsalicylic acid has been shown to be effective against cancer according to several scientific studies. It is common practice in many countries to treat women at risk for heart disease with a small dose of acetylsalicylic acid ? but not in Sweden.

Silke Kern emphasizes that the study is an observational study and that more research is necessary before any definitive conclusions can be made.

"Our results indicate that acetylsalicylic acid may protect the brain, at least among women at high risk for a heart attack or stroke. However, we do not know the long term effects of routine treatment. We certainly do not want to encourage the elderly to self-medicate with aspirin to avoid dementia," she states.

The research group in Gothenburg has now started a follow-up study that will follow the older women for an additional five years.

Syria denounced at Beirut funeral rally for slain official

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Thousands of people gathered in central Beirut on Sunday for the funeral of an assassinated senior intelligence officer, accusing Syria of involvement in the killing and calling for Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati to quit.

Heavily armed troops and police stood guard as people flocked to Martyrs' Square in central Beirut.

Many waved the sky-blue flag of the Sunni-based opposition Future Party. Others carried Lebanon's cedar tree national flag but Syrian rebel flags were also seen.

One banner read "Go, go Najib" echoing the slogans of the Arab Spring.

Brigadier General Wissam al-Hassan was killed by a powerful car bomb in Beirut's Ashrafiyeh district on Friday. A Sunni Muslim close to the Hariri political clan, he had helped uncover a bomb plot that led to the arrest and indictment in August of a pro-Damascus former Lebanese minister.

He also led an investigation that implicated Syria and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah in the assassination of former prime minister Rafik al-Hariri in 2005.

Lebanese politicians have accused Syria's leadership of having a role in Hassan's killing, which deepened fears the civil war there is spreading over its borders.

People in the crowd at Martyrs' Square echoed that view.

"We blame Bashar al-Assad, the president of Syria," said Assmaa Diab, 14, from the northern city of Tripoli, Hassan's hometown. She was in the square with her sister and father.

"He is responsible for everything - in the past, now, and if we don't stand up to him, the future," she said.

The prime minister was also a focus of their anger.

Diab and other protesters said they wanted him to step down, saying he was too close to Shi'ite Hezbollah, who are part of his government, and to Assad.

"We are here to tell Mikati we don't need him any more and to tell Hezbollah we don't want any more of their games," said Hamza Akhrass, a 22-year-old student who had come from south Lebanon for the funeral. "Mikati takes too much pressure for Syria."

One banner read "People want the overthrow of Najib".

Mikati said on Saturday he had offered to resign to make way for a government of national unity but he had accepted a request by President Michel Suleiman to stay in office to allow time for talks on a way out of the political crisis.

SECTARIAN TENSIONS

The 19-month-old uprising in Syria against Assad has exacerbated deep-seated sectarian tensions in Lebanon, which is still scarred from its 1975-90 civil war.

Sunni-led rebels in Syria are fighting to overthrow Assad, who is from the Alawite minority, which has its roots in Shi'ite Islam. Lebanon's religious communities are divided between those that support Assad and those that back the rebels.

Mikati sought in vain to insulate the country from turmoil in its larger neighbor, which has long played a role in Lebanese politics.

Sunday's funeral march set off from Hassan's Internal Security Force headquarters in Ashrafiyeh and will pass the site of Friday's bombing before reaching Martyrs' Square where he will be buried alongside slain prime minister Hariri.

Mikati himself said he suspected Hassan's assassination was linked to his role in uncovering Syrian involvement in the August bomb plot.

Samir Geagea, a Christian political leader and critic of Assad, demanded that Lebanon suspend all security and military agreements with Damascus and expel the Syrian ambassador.

In Paris, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius also pointed to a Damascus connection. "We don't yet know exactly who is behind this but everything indicates that this is an extension of the Syrian tragedy," he told French television.

"I think this is a part of what is happening in Syria and shows again how the departure of Bashar al-Assad is urgent."

Hassan's killing has already provoked unrest in Lebanon.

In the streets of Beirut and other cities on Saturday, gunmen and demonstrators blocked roads with burning tires.

In the northern city of Tripoli, four people were wounded on Saturday by sniper fire on Jebel Mohsen, a neighborhood which is home to members of the Alawite faith. A pro-Hezbollah religious figure was killed in clashes in Tripoli on Friday, residents said.

Soldiers opened fire on a group who took over a road in the Bekaa Valley, wounding two people.

"The situation is fragile. I don't know if this is the first in a series of attacks - history would suggest it is," a Western diplomat said.

"Of all the people to go for, Hassan was the most dangerous target in terms of hitting Lebanon's stability."
