Puget Sound Energy?s operations in Thurston County ? in addition to the Thurston Public Utility District ? is the other half of the current public power debate, a company that has provided power here for more than 100 years.
Proposition 1 is the name of the Thurston County ballot measure that will determine whether the Thurston PUD will be given the authority to pursue public power.
Since the early 1990s, PSE?s base of operations in the county has been in Olympia at 2711 Pacific Ave. SE, a 3-acre site that is home to its customer service center, as well as employee offices and room for its trucks and equipment. There?s also a ?storm room,? showing two wall-size images of the county and its 30 substations.
A substation steps down the electrical voltage received from a transmission line so that it can be delivered safely to homes and businesses.
When the power is working, nobody notices PSE, other than the monthly bill they receive for the electricity and natural gas that they use. It?s a different story when the power goes out.
PSE got hit with the triple whammy of storms last January, a storm that started with snow, then freezing rain and then wind, knocking out power throughout Western Washington and in the county, where many were without power for several days.
About 1,500 to 2,000 customers a day visited the service center during the storm, most of whom wanted to explain where they were living and whether PSE could pinpoint their specific problem, said Casey Cochrane, local government and community relations manager for PSE.
Hundreds of line crews were called into the area to help and the maps in the storm room lit up, dotted with information about problem spots in the county. The storm cost PSE $72 million.
?About 90 percent of the transmission lines had some kind of problem,? said Gretchen Aliabadi, a spokeswoman for PSE.
Those transmission lines deliver power from several sources.
In 2011, that fuel mix was 49 percent hydroelectric ? higher than normal because of the recent excellent snowpack, spokesman Roger Thompson said ? 32 percent coal, 16 percent natural gas-fired electricity and smaller percentages for some renewable energy, not including wind power, and nuclear power.
PSE owns dams on the Baker River, the Puyallup River and at Snoqualmie Falls. The company also has long-term contracts to purchase hydroelectric power from Chelan, Douglas and Grant county PUDs, Thompson said.
PSE?s wind farms generate about 10 percent of its power needs, but that total is not included in the company?s 2011 fuel mix because it has sold that power as renewable energy credits. Once sold, it can?t be claimed as a source of power for PSE, Thompson said.
Puget Sound Energy in Thurston County
Location: 2711 Pacific Ave. SE Olympia
Years in business: Puget Sound Energy has provided some form of power, electricity or gas, to the county for more than 100 years; the current PSE service center in Olympia has been based at the location since 1991.
Employees: 92.

Did you know? About 10,000 to 12,000 customers a month visit PSE?s service center in Olympia.
Regulators: PSE is subject to review by the state Utilities and Transportation Commission. Since 2002, the company has had seven general rate increase requests before the UTC board.
Owners: PSE was a publicly traded company until 2009 when it was acquired and taken private by a consortium led by a division of the Macquarie Group of Australia, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and other investors.
Partners: Potelco is PSE?s construction contractor and Asplundh is the company?s tree trimmer.
Renewable energy: PSE has invested $15 million into energy- efficiency programs in Thurston County in the past five years.

NEW YORK (AP) ? U.S. stock futures headed down Friday, the last trading day of the quarter, as investors fretted over the economy of Spain and absorbed a disappointing report on U.S. consumer spending.
The Spanish government announced big spending cuts on Thursday aimed at convincing potential bailout creditors and investors that it has a rock-solid plan to heal its public finances. But the positive momentum generated that budget ground to a halt, as investors awaited more news, including stress test results into 14 banks due after European markets close.
The Moody's rating agency is also expected to weigh in on Spain's creditworthiness, and there are concerns the government's rating will be cut to "junk" status.
Dow Jones industrial average futures fell 63 points to 13,351. The broader Standard and Poor's 500 futures slid 6.1 points to 1,435. Nasdaq 100 futures gave up 8 points to 2,806.5.
The U.S. markets appeared poised to follow European indices down. Madrid's IBEX index traded 1.1 percent lower at 7,756. Elsewhere, Germany's DAX was 0.48 percent lower at 7,254 while the CAC-40 in France fell 1.3 percent to 3,394. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was 0.1 percent lower at 5,771.
A report on U.S. consumer spending didn't offer any help. Even though the Commerce Department said spending rose 0.5 percent in August ? the biggest jump since February? most of the increase went for higher gas prices.
That meant less growth elsewhere for strained household budgets. Spending on items expected to last at least three years like appliances and automobiles, rose 0.3 percent. And incomes rose just 0.1 percent, reflecting weak job growth.
Earlier in Asia, stocks rose on continued speculation that China's central bank will act soon to help the world's No. 2 economy. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 0.4 percent and South Korea's Kospi added nearly 0.4 percent. But Japan's Nikkei 225 index lost 0.9 percent, sinking on a government report that showed industrial production fell further in August.
.U.S. stocks to watch include Walgreen Co., which reported a 55 percent drop in fiscal fourth-quarter profit, weighed down by big charges related to an inventory adjustment and its investment in a European retailer. Its adjusted results beat Wall Street expectations, but the stock fell 2.2 percent to $35.78 in premarket trading.
Nike Inc. shares fell 3.7 percent to $92.48 premarket, after reporting a 12 percent drop in fiscal first-quarter profit and revealing a slowdown in orders from retailers for the coming months, particularly in China.
Bank of America Corp. said it will pay $2.43 billion to settle a class-action lawsuit related to its acquisition of Merrill Lynch during the height of the financial crisis. The bank denied allegations it misled investors about the financial health of both companies, but said it settled to remove the issue behind it. Shares edged down 1 percent to $8.88.

LetsLunch, a networking site that aims to help business professionals meet up for lunch, has just launched version 3.0 of its service, adding some additional features as well as expanding service to the U.K.
The service works by allowing business professionals to sign up and create a profile that outlines their industry and interests, as well as when they might be available to have lunch with other users. Then the site matches you up with other business professionals in your area who might be relevant to your interests and you can choose a specific time and place to meet.
When looking for users to lunch with, you can view short bios, a list of professional interests such as online media or entrepreneurship, and even reviews from other users who have lunched with them in the past. You can also see links to social networking sites like Twitter and LinkedIn if you wish to connect with them further.
Version 3.0 gives users the option to become ?sponsored lunchers,? helping them to be seen by more users of the site and thus making the most of their networking opportunities. Other upgrades include social media integrations, group lunch features, and of course expansion into the U.K. market.
The whole idea behind LetsLunch is to ?make your lunch break count.? Instead of just eating a sandwich at your desk or picking up fast food, you can actually make new contacts that might help further your business interests.
Though there are plenty of sites that allow business users to meet others and talk online, this one actually facilitates face-to-face meetings, so there can be more chances for expanding your actual network.
Many business owners and professionals may prefer a more traditional or organic form of networking, but many aspects of business are being changed by the Internet, so this type of site may not be such a huge leap.
Especially for people who may have a hard time building their business network naturally, such as those who work remotely or have recently moved to a new city. ?A service such as this could prove valuable in a number of different capacities.

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "Hitchcock," the Sacha Gervasi film starring Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitcock and Helen Mirren as his wife, Alma Reville, will have its world premiere on the opening night of the 2012 AFI Fest, the American Film Institute announced on Thursday.
The film, which was recently scheduled for a November release by Fox Searchlight, will premiere at AFI Fest on Thursday, November 1.
"Hitchcock" focuses on the making of the 1960 film "Psycho," and also features Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, Jessica Biel as Vera Miles and James D'Arcy as Anthony Perkins.
"This film pulls back the curtain and takes us behind-the-scenes of his lifelong collaboration with his wife Alma during the making of his 1960 masterpiece 'Psycho,'" said AFI Fest director Jacqueline Lyanga in a release announcing the selection. "It's the perfect film to welcome our audience of movie-lovers with on opening night."
AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale called the film "a bloody valentine to creative genius and the inspired woman at his side."
Hitchcock conducted a master seminar at the AFI in 1970, and received the organization's Life Achievement Award in 1979. Four of his films, including "Psycho," appear on the AFI's list of the 100 greatest movies of all time. ("Vertigo," "Rear Window" and "North by Northwest" are the others.)
The film marks a change of pace for co-writer and director Gervasi, whose last film was the music documentary "Anvil! The Story of Anvil." Although he wrote the films "The Big Tease" and "The Terminal," "Hitchcock" marks his narrative directorial debut.
The recent decision by Fox Searchlight to give it a November release in the heart of awards season was seen as a sign that the studio expects "Hitchcock" to be a factor in this year's Oscar race.
The AFI Fest 2012, which is sponsored by Audi, will kick off on November 1 with the "Hitchcock" gala and will run through November 8, when it will close with the premiere of Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln."
Tickets are free to the public, though only paid patron passholders will receive reserved tickets to high-profile events like the "Hitchcock" premiere. Tickets will be made available to AFI members on October 24, and to the general public on October 25.

LONDON (AP) ? British police say they have arrested a former Credit Suisse executive on U.S. fraud charges linked to the distortion of the value of subprime mortgage securities.
U.S. authorities allege that the desire to fatten year-end bonuses motivated Kareem Serageldin to conspire to hide the deteriorating condition of the U.S. housing market.
Serageldin ? the financial company's former managing director and global head of structured credit ? has been charged with conspiracy, falsifying books and records, and wire fraud in the U.S.
Scotland Yard confirmed that Serageldin, 39, was taken into custody on Wednesday. Extradition proceedings against the U.S. citizen will begin Thursday at London's Westminster Magistrates' Court.

Persistence pays.
I know, because I?ve seen consumers whose requests were either so unreasonable or so petty, that I dismissed them without a second thought. I told them there was no hope.
But they ignored me, pressed their cases?and won.
When you have a problem with a company, you can use persistence as a tool to bludgeon your opponent ? normally an intransigent offshore call center or ?help desk? ? into submission.
But there?s a right way to do it.
Here are a few secrets I?ve picked up along the way.
Good manners are your deadliest weapon. The complaint-resolution process is often designed to not only frustrate you, but to make you walk away in disgust.
Always be polite and they won?t have an excuse to hang up on you or to stop responding to your emails.
And yes, this is true even when your case is totally frivolous.
Few consumer complaints are resolved in real time (although when they are ? that?s a beautiful thing!).
Use any of the popular calendaring programs to send you a regular reminder to check in with a company.
Your impeccably cordial follow-up emails will be the proverbial squeaky wheel that gets the job done.
If you don?t get a speedy resolution from the main ?1-800? number or from the ?Contact Us? page, take it to the next level.
Finding the email address of a customer service manager, a VP, or even the chief executive, isn?t difficult. They should hear from you, too.
Many disaffected customers try to email the CEO directly in hopes of a quick resolution.
But without a paper trail ? the back-and-forth between you and the ?Contact Us? page or a manager ? it will just get bounced back to the ?customer service? department.
You?ll get lots of ?nos? along the way and you?ll read a lot of form letters.
You?ll even hear representatives tell you by phone, in person, and by website ?chat? that they can?t help you anymore.
It?s not you; it?s them. They can help you. They just don?t want to. But they will.
Project positive. ?I know how much you believe in customer satisfaction, so I?m sure you?ll want an opportunity to make this right.?
Expressing this can-do attitude is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Doing it over, and over, and over, often leaves a company with no choice but to comply.
A few numbers to remember:
2 to 4 ? that?s the number of weeks it takes for the typical complaint to be resolved.
60 ? That?s the number of days you have to dispute a credit card charge.
Be extra nice for the first two weeks, insistent for the next two, and spend the following four weeks using these techniques as a battering ram to get what you want.
(If it looks like the company won?t play ball and is trying to run down the clock until its two months are up, use the last two weeks of the 60 days to file a dispute with your bank.)
Finding good customer service shouldn?t be a chore, but when it becomes one, it?s the right combination of patience, politeness and persistence that will get you what you deserve.
Christopher Elliott is a consumer advocate who blogs about getting better customer service at?On Your Side. Connect with him on?Twitter?and?Facebook?or send him your questions?by email.

This article examines the typical characteristics and constitutional consequences of a largely neglected phenomenon that I call the ?democratic coup d??tat.? To date, the academic legal literature has analyzed all military coups under an anti-democratic framework. That conventional framework considers military coups to be entirely anti-democratic and assumes that all coups are perpetrated by power-hungry military officers seeking to depose existing regimes in order to rule their nations indefinitely. Under the prevailing view, therefore, all military coups constitute an affront to stability, legitimacy, and democracy.
This article, which draws on fieldwork that I conducted in Egypt and Turkey in 2011, challenges that conventional view and its underlying assumptions. The article argues that, although all military coups have anti-democratic features, some coups are distinctly more democracy-promoting than others because they respond to popular opposition against authoritarian or totalitarian regimes, overthrow those regimes, and facilitate free and fair elections.
Following a democratic coup, the military temporarily governs the nation as part of an interim government until democratic elections take place. Throughout the democratic-transition process, the military behaves as a self-interested actor and entrenches, or attempts to entrench, its policy preferences into the new constitution drafted during the transition. Constitutional entrenchment may occur in three ways: procedural, substantive, and institutional. The article uses three comparative case studies to illustrate the democratic-coup phenomenon and the constitutional-entrenchment thesis: (1) the 1960 military coup in Turkey; (2) the 1974 military coup in Portugal; and (3) the 2011 military coup in Egypt.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Two new studies from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Chronic Kidney Disease Prognosis Consortium found that the presence of chronic kidney disease itself can be a strong indicator of the risk of death and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) even in patients without hypertension or diabetes. Both hypertension and diabetes are common conditions with chronic kidney disease with hypertension being the most prevalent.
The studies were released online in advance of publication in The Lancet.
Chronic kidney disease affects 10 to 16 percent of all adults in Asia, Europe, Australia and the United States. Kidney function is measured by estimating glomerular filtration rate and kidney damage is often quantified by measuring albumin, the major protein in the urine standardized for urine concentration.
In the hypertension meta-analysis, low kidney function and high urine protein was associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality and ESRD in both individuals with and without hypertension. The associations of kidney function and urine protein with mortality outcomes were stronger in individuals without hypertension than in those with hypertension, whereas the kidney function and urine protein associations with ESRD did not differ by hypertensive status.
In the diabetes analysis, individuals with diabetes had a higher risk of all-cause, cardiovascular mortality and ESRD compared to those without diabetes across the range of kidney function and urine protein. Despite their higher risks, the relative risks of these outcomes by kidney function and urine protein are much the same irrespective of the presence or absence of diabetes.
"Chronic kidney disease should be regarded as at least an equally relevant risk factor for mortality and ESRD in individuals without hypertension as it is in those with hypertension," said Bakhtawar K. Mahmoodi, MD, PhD, lead author of the hypertension analyses.
"These data provide support for clinical practice guidelines which stage chronic kidney disease based on kidney function and urine protein across all causes of kidney disease. The conclusions are strengthened by the findings of leading studies and the participation of investigators from 40, countries and a detailed analysis of over 1 million participants," said Josef Coresh, MD, PhD, MHS, the Consortium's principal investigator and professor in the Bloomberg School's Department of Epidemiology.
"Association of kidney disease measures with mortality and end-stage renal disease in individuals with and without hypertension: a meta-analysis" (lead author, Bakhtawar K. Mahmoodi, MD, PhD, from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and University Medical Center Groningen, the Netherlands) and "Association of kidney disease measures with mortality and end-stage renal disease in individuals with and without diabetes: a meta-analysis" (lead author Caroline Fox, MD, from the Framingham Heart Study) were written by the Chronic Kidney Disease Prognosis Consortium (CKD-PC), which includes approximately 200 collaborators and data from 40 countries.
The US National Kidney Foundation and a variety of sources such as national institutes of health and medical research councils as well as foundations and industry sponsors supporting the authors and collaborating cohorts of the CKD-PC.

BOSTON?? Faced with the daunting task of evaluating more than 34,000 drug cases handled by a Massachusetts chemist accused of misconduct, prosecutors and defense attorneys are starting with 1,140 cases of people who are already serving prison sentences based on potentially tainted evidence.
David Meier, a defense attorney and former prosecutor appointed to help sort through the legal quagmire created by the chemist's alleged actions, on Monday turned over a list of 690 people currently serving sentences in state prisons and 450 who are currently serving sentences in county jails. Samples in all of the cases were tested by chemist Annie Dookhan, who state police say failed to follow testing protocols and deliberately mishandled evidence in some cases.
Meier said it is unclear how many of those samples might have been tainted by Dookhan's actions, but said both sides want to deal first with people who are already in prison.
"That is our first priority, people who are presently incarcerated," he said.
Meier said lawyers in those cases will now have to work out resolutions on a case-by-case basis.
"The merits and any alleged issues in any one of those cases is for prosecutors and defense attorneys and judges to determine," he said.
State police have said Dookhan was involved in testing more than 60,000 drug samples involving about 34,000 defendants during her nine years at the Boston lab. Dookhan resigned in March during an internal investigation by the state Department of Public Health, which ran the lab until state police took over on July 1 as part of a budget directive.
Meier, who was appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick last week, met Monday with a group of district attorneys, defense attorneys and public safety officials. After the meeting, Meier said he turned over a list of currently incarcerated defendants whose cases were worked on by Dookhan, either as the primary chemist, who performs an initial test on a drug sample, or as the secondary chemist, who performs a second, confirmatory test.
The list does not include thousands of people who are currently awaiting trial, are on probation or are serving federal sentences in cases in which Dookhan tested drug samples.
Since the lab was closed last month, judges in Suffolk and Norfolk counties have already begun to hear motions filed by defense attorneys seeking bail reductions for drug defendants awaiting trial in cases handled by Dookhan. Prosecutors have agreed to many of those motions, citing possibly tainted evidence.
Dookhan hasn't been charged, but the state attorney general's office is conducting a criminal investigation.
On Monday, a judge in Boston agreed to put the sentences of career criminal David Huffman on hold and set bail for him at $75,000 cash, with GPS monitoring. The 55-year-old Huffman had pleaded guilty in August to trafficking in heroin and cocaine, possession of oxycodone with the intent to distribute and unlawful possession of ammunition and a firearm as an armed career criminal He began serving concurrent seven- to 10-year sentences last month.
Huffman's lawyer, Bernard Grossberg, said the next step will likely be for the defense to ask that Huffman be allowed to withdraw his guilty plea.
"He would not have pleaded guilty to the gun charges if it was not part and parcel of his plea on the drug charges," Grossberg said.
Jake Wark, a spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Dan Conley, said prosecutors opposed the motion to put his sentence on the gun charges on hold. He said the gun evidence was tested in a different lab and was unaffected by the drug lab scandal.
"This is an individual who's been involved in just about every type of property and violent crime over the course of 40 years. He is a mid-tier narcotics distributor and was a plague on the community," Wark said.
"We believe the judge should have treated the two cases separately," he said.
Dookhan has not responded to repeated requests for comment. Her father, Rasheed Khan, told The Associated Press that she had been "bullied and abused," but he would not say by whom.
"No one has heard her side of the story," Khan said outside his home in Kissimmee, Fla., on Saturday.
State police have said Dookhan failed to follow testing protocols and deliberately mishandled evidence in some cases.
In a letter sent to defense attorneys earlier this month, Max Stern, the president of the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, said he was told during a meeting with state officials that Dookhan was accused of deliberately tampering with evidence, including the weight of drug samples, which can affect the length of sentences given to drug defendants.

I read the following words this morning:
To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven;
Eccl. 3: 1-10
Joy is so hard to come by these days. It's seems as though everyone, myself included, complains about the very things that prepare us and grow us in our walk through this foreign land.
This land is foreign we seem to forget we're strangers here only passing through and yet we settle in thinking this is our world.
The days of our lives are in the hands of God. The sleepless nights with crying babies are from the hands of our Lord. The grace to keep silent when I want to scream is only there because He helped me. When I don't do what I know I should do He's not surprised. He is God and He knows. I hide from him like Eve hid from Him in the garden but He calls to me. He knows what I've done and He wants me to come stand before Him. ??
We all want control and we fight for it like a fish fights the line of a hook and bait but ultimately the results of all our endeavors are completely in the hands of God.
It's comforting somehow to know that this very morning and this very day has been ordained by my Father. I can rest. I can smile when things seem overwhelming or frustrating. It is a season but?I'm slowly learning that it's not the season necessarily, it's what I learn during the season that matters.

Are you interested in becoming a currency trader? Here?s your chance! You may have many questions about how foreign exchange works, but this article will help clear up any questions you may have. This article will provide you with some excellent tips for beginning foreign exchange trading in the right way.
You should be aware that the foreign exchange market does not have a centralized location. This protects the foreign currency markets from getting shut down or ruined by a natural disaster. Just because an emergency or disaster occurs doesn?t mean you need to close out all of your trades. A major event may affect the market, but will not necessarily affect your currency pair that you are working with.
When you make money, be sure to celebrate your success. If you?ve made some profitable trades, consider sending your broker a withdrawal order so you can cash out some profits. Try to focus on the reasons you invested in the first place. What do you want to finance?
Make sure that you are the one to stay on top of your trades. While it may be tempting to use software to monitor your trades, monitoring them yourself is a better way to protect your investments. Forex trading is based on a numbers system. However, the smartest and most successful trading choices are made by intelligent, dedicated, and insightful human beings.
TIP! Once you?ve become comfortable with your current methods of trading, consider mixing it up and giving scalping methods a chance. This involves making a number of small trades in a short time period.
There are many aspects to trading that are important to learn, such as Fibonacci levels. Fibonacci levels can help you to make decisions about trading. Fibonnacci levels can guide you towards the best exits.
You should vet any tips or advice you receive regarding the Foreign Exchange market. An approach that gets great results for one person may prove a disaster for you. You have to develop the ability to discern changes in technical signals yourself and now how to reposition appropriately.
Create a plan. Without a solid, informed trading plan, you are likely to encounter difficulties in generating profits. You should come up with a plan you can stick with so you will not be tempted to make trades based on your feelings, which can make you lose money.
TIP! Do not buck the trends when you are new to the trade market. Don?t try picking the highs and lows of the market either.
Keep an eye on all of the relevant financial news. The news usually has great speculation that can help you gauge the rise and fall of currency. If you have a email or text alert service they can keep you updated on news.
Generating money through the Forex market can cause people to become overconfident and make careless trades. The same thing can happen when a person panics. Work hard to maintain control of your emotions and only act once you have all of the facts ? never act based on your feelings.
Beginners are often tempted to try to invest all over the place when they start out in forex trading. You should stick with one currency pair while you are learning the basics of trading. However, you should avoid doing this until you begin to have more knowledge about all the different markets so that you won?t suffer giant losses.
It?s actually best to do the opposite. You will find it less tempting to do this if you have charted your goals beforehand.
TIP! You should learn to read the market for yourself, and make your own analyses. Success in Forex trading requires the ability to make your own decisions, based on a thorough knowledge of the market.
Do not over complicate things. Avoid trying to jump into a system that is overly complicated, as this will only make it harder. In the beginning, it?s best to only use the methods that are simple and also work well for you. As you become more experienced, you can expand on your knowledge. Try to come up with ways to expand upon your base of knowledge.
Remember that on the foreign exchange market, up and down patterns will always be present, but there will only be one dominant pattern at a time. Finding sell signals is easy when there is an up market. You should tailor your trading strategy to current market trends.
Come up with clear, achievable goals, and do all you can to reach them. If you decide to start investing in forex, set a goal for yourself as well as a timetable for achieving that goal. When you are new to trading, keep in mind that there is room for error. You should determine the amount of time you can dedicate to learning forex and performing research in addition to trading.
TIP! Limit your losses on trades by making use of stop loss orders. A lot of Forex traders won?t exit a position, hoping that the downward trend will reverse itself.
Foreign Exchange marketing holds many advantages over other investment and money making schemes. You can trade any time of day since it is available 24/7. You do not need large sums of money to get in on opportunities with foreign exchange. The forex trading market is accessible to nearly anyone at anytime.
Select a trading style based on your priorities. If you do not have time to watch the market constantly, use delayed orders or invest over a longer time frame rather than relying on day trades.
Do not change the place in which you put stop loss points, you will lose more in the long run. Have a set strategy and make sure to abide by it.
Some people think that the stop losses they set are visible to others in the market. They fear that the price will be manipulated somehow to dip just below the stop loss before moving back up gain. This is not true, and you should never trade without having stop loss markers.
TIP! You need to be able to customize your automated trading system. The software needs to be changeable to suit your needs.
Use online search engines to come up with a list of trustworthy brokers, as well as a list of those to avoid. You can find a lot of useful tips about brokers on Forex forums. Use this knowledge to choose a good broker so that you can avoid losing profits.
These tips will allow you to understand forex better, and make better trading decisions. This will allow you to work more effectively and make a better profit. We hope these tips will help you begin in foreign exchange and help carry you through to trading at a professional level.

THE Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, will focus heavily on African nations while in New York this week as she leads the final concerted push for Australia to win a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
She is scheduled to arrive in New York this morning for the annual four-day UN General Assembly and will lead lobbying efforts with the backing of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Bob Carr, and his parliamentary secretary, Richard Marles.
Under a process begun in 2008 by the then prime minister Kevin Rudd, Australia is vying for one of the 10 non-permanent seats for 2013 and 2014. The vote of the 193 UN members will be on October 18 and 128 votes are needed.
Australia - which has served four times on the Security Council, the last time in 1986 - belongs to a bloc known as Western Europe and Others Group. It is competing with Luxembourg and Finland for one of two spots allotted to that bloc.
''It's a very difficult and close race,'' said an official familiar with the bid. ''We are competitive but we can't afford to be complacent.''
Most world leaders, including the US President, Barack Obama, will be in New York. Ms Gillard is planning up to 10 bilateral meetings with African leaders. She will use her address to the General Assembly, scheduled for early Thursday morning Sydney time, to showcase Australia's commitment to the organisation of which it was a founding member.
African nations have 54 votes and Ms Gillard cancelled an invitation to travel to a summit of African leaders in early July because the carbon price had just been introduced. This was considered, in diplomatic circles, not to have helped Australia's chances.
Her schedule includes meetings with the new President of Egypt, Mohammed Mursi, as well as the leaders of Malawi, Liberia and South Africa. She will also attend a meeting looking at the plights of Mali, Niger and Mauritania.
Australia has been spending more of its aid budget in Africa in an attempt to win the UN seat.
In her address, Ms Gillard is expected to point out Australia has contributed 65,000 personnel to UN peacekeeping missions, is the 12th-largest contributor to the UN's budget and has the world's 11th-highest foreign aid budget.
She is also scheduled to met the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, and the Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.

DUBAI | Sun Sep 23, 2012 3:01pm EDT
DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran plans to switch its citizens onto a domestic Internet network in what officials say is a bid to improve cyber security but which many Iranians fear is the latest way to control their access to the web.
The announcement, made by a government deputy minister on Sunday, came as state television announced Google Inc's search engine and its email service would be blocked "within a few hours".
"Google and Gmail will be filtered throughout the country until further notice," an official identified only by his last name, Khoramabadi, said, without giving further details.
The Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) said Google ban was connected to the anti-Islamic film posted on the company's YouTube site which has caused outrage throughout the Muslim world. There was no official confirmation.
Iran has one of the biggest Internet filters of any country in the world, preventing normal Iranians from accessing countless sites on the official grounds they are offensive or criminal.
But many Iranians believe the block on sites such as Facebook and YouTube is due to their use in anti-government protests after the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahamdinejad in 2009.
Sites expressing views considered anti-government are also routinely blocked.
Iranians commonly overcome the government filter by using virtual private network (VPN) software that makes the computer appear as if it is based in another country.
But officials have long spoken of creating an Iranian Internet system which would be largely isolated from the World Wide Web.
"In recent days, all governmental agencies and offices ... have been connected to the national information network," deputy communications and technology minister Ali Hakim-Javadi was quoted as saying by the Mehr news agency.
The second phase of the plan would be to connect ordinary Iranians to the national network, he said.
According to Iranian media, the domestic system would be fully implemented by March 2013 but it was not clear whether access to the global Internet would be cut once the Iranian system is rolled out.
Even using VPNs, many Iranians suffered serious problems accessing email and social networking sites in February, ahead of parliamentary elections.

The Islamic Republic tightened cyber security after its nuclear program was attacked in 2010 by the Stuxnet computer worm, which caused centrifuges to fail at its main uranium enrichment facility.
Tehran, whose nuclear programme is suspected by the West of being aimed at developing a bomb, accused the United States and Israel of deploying the worm.
Authorities said in April a computer virus was detected inside the control systems of Kharg Island - which handles the vast majority of Iran's crude oil exports - but the terminal remained operational.
Communications and Technology Minister Reza Taqipour said last month Iran needed to develop its own network to ensure the safety of the country's information.
"Control over the Internet should not be in the hands of one or two countries," he said. "Especially on major issues and during crises, one cannot trust this network at all."
Iran threatened in May to take legal action against Google over its decision to drop the term "Persian Gulf" from its Google Maps and leaving the waterway between Iran and the Arabian peninsula nameless.
Many Arab states refer to the sea as the "Arabian Gulf", a term Iran considers unacceptable.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? A team of neuroscientists and chemists from the U.S. and China September 24 publish research suggesting that a class of currently used anti-cancer drugs as well as several previously untested synthetic compounds show effectiveness in reversing memory loss in two animal models of Alzheimer's disease.
CSHL Professor Yi Zhong, Ph.D., who led the research conducted in fruit flies and mice, says he and his colleagues were surprised with their results, which, he stressed, used two independent experimental approaches "the results of which clearly converged."
Specifically, the research converged on what Zhong's team suggests is a "preferred target" for treating memory loss associated with the amyloid-beta (A?) plaques seen in advanced Alzheimer's patients. That target is the epidermal growth factor receptor, often called by its acronym, EGFR.
Overexpression of the EGFR is a characteristic feature of certain cancers, notably a subset of lung cancers. Two targeted treatments, erlotinib (Tarceva) and gefitinib (Iressa), can dramatically, albeit transiently, reverse EGFR-positive cancers, by blocking the EGF receptor and thus preventing its activation.
The newly published research by Zhong's team suggests that the signaling within cells that is induced by EGFR activation also plays a role in the pathology -- still poorly understood -- involved in A?-associated memory loss seen in Alzheimer's patients.
Zhong and colleagues previously had studied A?-associated memory loss in fruit flies with brain cells expressing the A?-42 peptide (a specific version of the protein, composed of 42 amino acids, seen in Alzheimer's plaques). These fruit flies are regarded as models of the illness in part because the A?-42 they manifest is encoded by a human gene, inserted in their genome. In behavioral experiments, such flies have been shown to suffer memory deficiencies analogous to those seen in human Alzheimer's.
Enhanced activation of EGFR exacerbates memory loss in flies
In the current round of experiments, Zhong's team demonstrated that enhanced activation of EGFRs in brain cells exacerbated memory loss in the A?-42 fruit fly model of Alzheimer's disease. This led them to dose 3-day-old flies of this type with the two anti-cancer EGFR inhibitors over a week's time, which was shown in behavioral tests on day 11 to prevent memory loss. The results were then confirmed in mouse models of Alzheimer's, also based on the human A?-42 gene.
This was remarkable, but even more so, says Zhong, because of a parallel but independent experimental process that also suggested EGFR as a drug target for Alzheimer's. This parallel process consisted of screening, by Zhong's collaborators in China, of some 2,000 synthetic compounds for activity against A?-induced memory loss in model fruit flies. Of these, 45 compounds showed positive results in fruit flies after two months of dosing. Nine of these were selected for testing in mouse models, of which four showed positive results after two months.
"We were amazed to find that three of these compounds -- designated JKF-006, JKF-011 and JKF-027 -- not only showed effective results in rescuing memory loss in the mice, but also, in test-tube-based experiments prevented A?-42 from activating human EGFR," Zhong reports.
Blocking EGFR signaling appeared to prevent memory loss
Importantly, a precise mechanism could not be conclusively demonstrated from this and related experiments. But the available evidence leads the scientists to propose in a paper appearing online today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, that reversal of memory loss occurs when clumps of beta-amyloid proteins are either prevented directly from "docking" with the human EGF receptor, or prevent phosphate groups from attaching to the receptor, a process called phosphorylation. Both hypothesized processes would prevent the initiation of the EGFR intracellular signaling cascade.
Zhong and colleagues note the uncertainty of Alzheimer's pathology. Memory loss stemming from A?-induced activation of EGFR "may reflect the acute toxic effects of A?, which might be independent of synaptic and neuronal degeneration," they note. To gain more insight, the team tested drug treatment of middle-aged mice (8 months old) with advanced memory loss during an 18-day period -- some six weeks shorter than the dosing period initially shown to be effective.
"Eighteen days -- the shortest dosing period we tested -- was sufficient to reverse loss in these mice, although we should note that these animals had few morphological changes in the brain despite their severe memory loss when treatment began," Zhong says.
Because of the positive results they obtained in reversing memory loss in animal models, the team suggests additional testing with EGFR inhibitors be conducted, as well as testing of "behaviorally screened chemicals in treatments of Alzheimer's patients."

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A Lebanese Christian political leader and ally of the Shi'ite group Hezbollah said he escaped an assassination attempt when his convoy came under fire in southern Lebanon.
Michel Aoun, head of the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM), was returning to Beirut on Saturday evening when one of the cars in his convoy was shot at in the mainly Sunni city of Sidon, a statement on the FPM website said.
"I have been exposed to three assassination attempts (in the past) and the perpetrators were discovered," the website quoted Aoun as saying. "This is the fourth and we hope they will be revealed."
The attack on Aoun's convoy is the latest reported threat to prominent politicians in Lebanon, where tensions over the uprising in neighboring Syria against President Bashar al-Assad have polarized chronic sectarian and political rifts.
Two other Christian politicians, Samir Geagea and Boutros Harb, have said they were targets earlier this year. Geagea said shots were fired at his home in northern Lebanon in April and Harb said security forces found a bomb in the lift of his office building in July.
Aoun's largely Christian FPM is allied with pro-Assad Hezbollah in the government of Prime Minister Najib Mikati, while Geagea and Harb are both staunchly anti-Assad.
Other politicians including Shi'ite parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri and Druze leader Walid Jumblatt have been warned about threats against them, political sources have said.
Former prime minister Saad al-Hariri, whose father was assassinated in a February 2005 Beirut bombing, has been living outside Lebanon for nearly a year and a half, partly due to fears for his security.

Orlando Dawn likely to shine at Crayford
Since July this year, Orlando Dawn has been enjoying great momentum. He has registered a number of iconic triumphs during this period. In the light of the S. Gammon trained fawn dog?s ongoing purple patch, we can hope that he will deliver an influential performance in tonight?s Read Tipster In Metro Every Day Hurdle that is scheduled to be run at Crayford racecourse.
In the line-up of six runners, the five-year-old veteran hound seems to be the strongest candidate; therefore, he will take no time to adjust to the 380-meter hurdled course. The open race will confer ?250 upon the one who finishes first.
Orlando Dawn has a lot of experience under his belt. He has been running since September 2009.
The way the dashing dog performed during the last two months was really amazing. In the first half of July, he elegantly bagged a couple of consecutive triumphs.
On August 4, the skilled sprinter ran very well again and sealed top spot by beating the hot favourite candidate Ardera Neasa. He went on to lift the ace title of Racs CC Wig & Shoes Stakes narrowly.
After earning two consecutive runner-up ranks, the talented son of Balintore Brave out of Vaughan Vixen won an A4 and an A3 races in a row. Being the 9-4 favourite, he beautifully stood second in the A2 380m Flat.?
Orlando Dawn earned enough applause by winning the H2 380m Hurdle on September 15. These stats speak volumes of the experienced hound?s inherent talent and unbeatable capabilities. Thus, he will surely be effective tonight.
Among the other contestants, Airforce Spirit is likely to perform well in the race. The R. Holloway trained white and black dog last won an open race on September 7. That was the Champions Night Hurdle - Heat 1, held at Romford.
He moved ahead to finish third in his last outing entitled as Wimbledon 480 Standard.
Above all, he has been regarded as the hot favourite candidate for this race. Thus, he can prove to be fatal enough for Orlando Dawn.
In this situation, a howling battle is imminent between the two mighty dogs. Good luck to them.

As Arctic sea ice melted to the lowest level ever recorded, researchers said they were unprepared for the speed of this facet of climate change. As Arctic ice melts, scientists worry it will add heat and moisture to the globe's climate system.
By Deborah Zabarenko,?Reuters / September 20, 2012
EnlargeArctic sea ice, a key indicator of climate change, melted to its lowest level on record this year before beginning its autumnal freeze, researchers at the?U.S. National Snow and Ice?Data Center?said on Wednesday.

The extent of ice?probably hit its low point on Sept. 16, when it covered 1.32 million square miles (3.42 million square km) of the Arctic?Ocean, the smallest amount since satellite records began 33 years ago.
Changing weather conditions could further shrink the extent, the center said. A final analysis is expected next month.
The record was broken on Aug. 26, when the ice?shrank below the record set in 2007. After that, it kept melting for three more weeks, bringing the ice?extent - defined by NSIDC as the area covered by at least 15 percent ice?- to nearly half of the 1979-2000 average.
"We are now in uncharted territory,"?Mark Serreze, the center's director, said in a statement. "While we've long known that as the planet warms up, changes would be seen first and be most pronounced in the Arctic, few of us were prepared for how rapidly the changes would actually occur."
The summer?ice isn't just dwindling. It is also thin, relatively fragile seasonal ice?instead of the hardier multi-year ice?that can better withstand bright sunlight.
"The strong late-season decline is indicative of how thin the ice?cover is," said NSIDC's Walt Meier. "Ice has to be quite thin to continue melting away as the sun goes down and fall approaches."
The Arctic?is a potent weather-maker for the temperate zone, and is sometimes dubbed Earth's air conditioner for its cooling effects. However, as ice?wanes and temperatures rise in the far north, the Arctic?could add more heat and moisture to the climate system.
"What happens in the Arctic?doesn't stay in the Arctic," said?Dan Lashof, a climate scientist at the nonprofit Natural Resources Defense Council. "This has a real impact on Americans where they live and work."
Melting Arctic?ice changes the shape and position of the jetstream, allowing tropical air to penetrate further north and Arctic?air to penetrate further south, Lashof said in a telephone interview, leading to more extreme weather.
"That is a truly staggering rate of melting, far beyond what scientists thought would happen a few years ago,"?Bob Ward?of the?London School of Economics?and Political Science said in a statement. "Policy-makers need to wake up to the scale and pace of the impacts from climate change."
Recent climate models suggest the Arctic?could be free of?ice?before 2050. But the observed rate of melting is faster than what is shown in many of the models, according to NSIDC scientist?Julienne Stroeve.
Both the?Northwest Passage?along?Canada's coast and the Northern Sea?Route along?Russia?were open to traffic this summer, and investors gathered in?Alaska?last month to discuss commercial and transportation opportunities for the Arctic.
The environmental group?Greenpeace International?took issue with that approach.
"Rather than dealing with the root causes of climate change, the current response from our leaders is to watch the?ice?melt and then divide up the spoils," the group's executive director,?Kumi Naidoo?said in a statement.
