OIL FUTURES: Crude Oil Down Slightly Ahead of Busy Week of News

Crude oil futures took a breather Monday and were marginally lower as investors looked ahead to a busy week of economic news.

Nymex front-month oil futures settled at $89.78 a barrel Monday, down 35 cents. Brent oil futures were trading at $106.15 a barrel, down 32 cents.

Analysts said the markets were likely to trade in a choppy fashion this week until this week's major economic events play out. In a three-round whammy of big-ticket economic news, markets are eyeing the conclusion of a Federal Open Markets Committee meeting Wednesday, a European Central Bank meeting Thursday and new U.S. jobs figures on Friday.

Also this week, the markets will receive the weekly petroleum inventory report on Wednesday. Crude-oil inventories fell 1.1 million barrels in the week ended July 27, according to an average of estimates from five analysts. Last week's inventory report surprised the markets following a large build.

These events come as global confidence in the economic outlook remains weak. Investors will be looking for news on whether the ECB will trim interest rates and if the U.S. Federal Reserve will undertake another round of quantitative easing. The median forecast of economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires calls for a gain of only 90,000 new jobs added in July, compared with 80,000 added in June.

"We're probably going to trade kind of choppy this week until the ECB," said Tariq Zahir, a managing member at Tyche Capital Advisors. "There's a lot of reason to stay on the sidelines and see what happens."

"We are in a wait-and-see mode," said Gene McGillian, broker and analyst at global brokerage Tradition Energy.

New U.S. data Monday showed the first year-on-year monthly increase in U.S. oil demand since early 2011.

U.S. oil demand in May rose 1.9%, or 344,000 barrels a day, from a year earlier to 18.707 million barrels a day, revised government data released Monday show.

The gain, led by a 2.4% jump in gasoline demand amid sliding prices, was the first year-on-year rise in the world's biggest oil consumer since March 2011 and the biggest since January 2011, data from the Energy Information Administration show.

But analysts said the greater consumption likely wouldn't continue in the months ahead.

Front-month reformulated gasoline blendstock, or RBOB, settled at $2.932 a gallon, up 4.4 cents. Front-month heating oil settled at $2.877 a gallon, down 1.2 cents.

Global travel industry gears up for Muslim tourist boom

From halal spas to prayer rooms at airport terminals, the global tourism industry is gearing up for a projected boom in Muslim travel over the next decade, experts say.

Their growing number and affluence means Muslims -- especially from the oil-rich Middle East -- are travelling like never before, and it is a trend that looks set to gather pace.

Spending by Muslim tourists is growing faster than the global rate and is forecast to reach $192 billion a year by 2020, up from $126 billion in 2011, according to a study by two companies specialising in the market.

The study, made available to AFP, was conducted in 47 countries by Singapore-based halal travel specialist Crescentrating, along with DinarStandard, a US-based firm that tracks the Muslim lifestyle market.

Crescentrating chief executive Fazal Bahardeen said Muslim-majority states such as Egypt, Malaysia and Indonesia were already favourite destinations, but non-Islamic countries are now "taking a serious look" at Muslim holidaymakers.

Malaysia, the number-one destination according to the findings, attracts Muslim visitors even during the ongoing fasting month of Ramadan.

Mohammed Ali Alali, 23, a petroleum engineering student from Dammam, Saudi Arabia, went there on honeymoon with his bride, a 20-year-old medicine student.

"It's not that far from Saudi Arabia and it's less expensive to travel here rather than Europe. It's also an Islamic country so that helps in many ways, like to find a mosque and Arabic food," he said after breaking fast at an Arabic restaurant in the capital Kuala Lumpur.

The availability of halal food tops the list of Muslim travellers' requirements, according to the survey.

Destinations such as Thailand and Australia, especially the Gold Coast, are already taking into account these travellers' needs in their services and facilities, Fazal told AFP.

That includes prayer rooms at airports and hotels, halal restaurants and even spas adapted to religious requirements.

"Why not try Gold Coast for a cooler Ramadan this year?" says the tourism website of Australia's Queensland state.

"With a long history of welcoming Middle Eastern visitors and a large resident community, facilities for Muslims in Gold Coast, Australia keep getting better every year."

The Economist Intelligence Unit said in a March report that meeting the needs of the world's 1.8 billion Muslims is fuelling business opportunities in numerous sectors.

"From food and Islamic finance, the industry is spreading its wings into pharmaceuticals, fashion and tourism, among many other areas," it said, noting more than half of the world's Muslim population is aged 24 or younger, many of them well-educated.

Thailand is hungrily eyeing the Muslim travel boom.

Its tourism authority --- which has an office in Dubai -- is promoting halal spas for Muslim tourists, who require strict privacy for male and female clients.

It also organised a month-long festival of Thai cuisine in the United Arab Emirates from June 8 to July 7.

Crescentrating's study ranked Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport the most Islam-friendly airport in a non-Muslim country.

And it found that tourists from the Gulf -- Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE -- are the sector's biggest spenders.

Gulf countries accounted for 37 percent of Muslim tourist spending in 2011 even though they represent a mere three percent of the global Muslim population.

Aesop's fable unlocks how crows and kids think

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? Cambridge scientists have used an age-old fable to help illustrate how we think differently to other animals.

Lucy Cheke, a PhD student at the University of Cambridge's Department of Experimental Psychology, expanded Aesop's fable into three tasks of varying complexity and compared the performance of Eurasian Jays with local school children.

The task that set the children apart from the Jays involved a mechanism which was counter-intuitive as it was hidden under an opaque surface. Neither the birds nor the children were able to learn how the mechanism worked, but the children were able to learn how to get the reward, whereas the birds were not.

The results of the study illustrate that children learn about cause and effect in the physical world in a different way to birds. While the Jay's appear to take account of the mechanism involved in the task, the children are more driven by simple cause-effect relationships.

Lucy Cheke said, "This makes sense because it is children's job to learn about new cause and effect relationships without being limited by ideas of what is or is not possible. The children were able to learn what to do to get the reward even if the chain-of-events was apparently impossible. Essentially, they were able to ignore the fact that it shouldn't be happening to concentrate on the fact that it was happening. The birds however, found it much harder to learn what was happening because they were put off by the fact that it shouldn't be happening."

The tasks were a variation of Aesop's fable that consisted of using a tube of water containing an out-of-reach prize. The subjects were required to use objects to displace the water so that the prize could be reached.

The first task involved two tubes, one filled with a prize amongst sawdust while the other tube contained a prize floating out of reach in water. The subject was presented with objects and was to choose which tube with which to drop the objects into: the sawdust or the water. Dropping objects into the tube containing sawdust obviously did not raise the level of the prize, whereas dropping the objects into the tube containing water created displacement and raised the prize within the reach of the subject.

The second task involved only one tube of water with a floating prize, but the subject was given a choice of what type of object to drop into the tube: an object that floats or another that sinks.

The final task presented the subject with an apparatus that consisted of one u-shaped tube with a wide arm and one narrow arm, and one single straight tube. These were imbedded in an opaque base so that the joining of the U-tube was hidden and the apparatus appeared to consist of two identical wide tubes with a narrow tube between them. Both the u-tube and the straight tube were filled with water such that the level was equal between them. The prize was inside the narrow arm of the u-tube, too narrow for the subject to insert an object to create displacement. Therefore, the subject was forced to pick one of the wider tubes on either side. If they picked the Wide arm of the u-tube, then the level of the prize would rise, but if they picked the single tube, it would not. Because the join of the u-tube was hidden, it appeared to the subjects as if dropping an item in one tube caused the level of water in a different tube to rise: which is impossible.

The birds were unable to complete this task, whereas the children performed at the same level as in the previous tasks, easily determining which tube raised the level of the water through trial and error.

Lucy added, "The Aesops fable paradigm provides an incredibly useful means by which to compare cause-effect learning with understanding of underlying mechanisms, i.e. folk physics. We are planning on extending this paradigm to really try to understand what's going on in the heads of adults, children and animals when they deal with problems in the physical world."

Lucy continued, "We would like to thank the staff, children and parents at Godmanchester community primary school for taking part in the study."

CNOOC to buy Nexen for $15.1 billion in China's largest foreign deal

HONG KONG/CALGARY (Reuters) - State-controlled CNOOC Ltd launched China's richest foreign takeover bid yet on Monday by agreeing to buy Canadian oil producer Nexen Inc for $15.1 billion, forcing Ottawa to decide whether security concerns outweigh its desire for foreign investment in its energy resources.

CNOOC, China's third-largest oil company, hopes to sell the deal to shareholders and the government with a hefty 61 percent premium to Nexen's Friday stock price. It promised to retain all employees and to make Canada home base for its Western Hemisphere operations.

CNOOC is offering $27.50 cash a share for Nexen, which has oil sands operations in the Canadian province of Alberta, shale gas in the province of British Columbia and extensive exploration and production holdings in the North Sea, Gulf of Mexico and offshore West Africa.

The initial shareholder reaction was enthusiastic. Shares of Nexen, whose board unanimously approved the deal, surged C$9.06, or 52 percent, to C$26.35 in Toronto on Monday.

"You won't find a single shareholder on the entire planet, or in the solar system, who is unhappy with this deal," said David Taylor, president and chief investment officer of Taylor Asset Management.

The move is the most ambitious foray by resource-hungry China into North American energy since a 2005 attempt to buy U.S.-based Unocal for $18.5 billion was thwarted by a political backlash there.

Chinese companies have been among the most aggressive in targeting assets around the globe to help feed demand in the world's second-biggest economy.

As for Canada, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has pushed to attract more energy investments from China. The CNOOC deal shows his efforts are bearing fruit, and Canada has more reasons to accept the deal than to veto it.

"For Canada, this agreement provides a stable source of investment for the many projects that Nexen operates, which includes the exploitation of bitumen in Alberta," CNOOC Chief Executive Li Fanrong said in a conference call.

"Because we intend to be a local company as much as a global one, we also intend to seek a listing for CNOOC Ltd on the Toronto Stock Exchange."

The deal is subject to a review by the Industry Ministry, which by law must decide if the takeover would bring a "net benefit" to Canada.

In its favor is both CNOOC's commitments to Canada, and the fact that Nexen's operations are mostly outside Canada.

CNOOC has only nine years worth of reserves based on its current production -- one of the lowest ratios among major oil companies worldwide. It said the deal would increase its proven reserves by 30 percent.

"CNOOC has been seeking overseas acquisitions, as the domestic reserves are limited. But there has been many limits, things like foreign companies (being) reluctant to sell, price too high. This deal would be quite a success," said Yan Shi, an oil analyst at brokerage UOB Kay Hian in Shanghai.

The move was quickly followed by another Chinese play for Canadian-owned oil assets, as Sinopec Corp said it would buy 49 percent of Talisman Energy's British unit for $1.5 billion.

CNOOC already has partnerships with Nexen, once a unit of Occidental Petroleum Corp. The Canadian company recently underwent a management shake-up and has been seen for years as a potential target.

Analysts had talked of Nexen as a turnaround story since Kevin Reinhart took over as interim CEO early this year. He won kudos for improving the reliability of such projects as the huge Buzzard oil field in the North Sea after years of missed production targets.

"I've watched this company try to turn itself around for so long," Taylor said. I'm not saying they couldn't have done it this time, I'm just saying that some of their assets are extremely tricky and complicated and there are a lot of unknowns."

Taylor said a rival bid is unlikely to emerge, given the huge premium and the fact that CNOOC is offering all cash.

Nexen is one of his top 10 holdings in the IA Clarington Focused Canadian Equity Class and Focused Balanced Fund.

Yet Nexen's C$6.1 billion Long Lake oil-sands development, for example, is several years behind schedule in reaching capacity production.

Such persistent problems have kept the stock well below the company's net asset value, said Norman MacDonald, vice president and portfolio manager at Invesco Trimark.

REGULATORY QUESTIONS

CNOOC made its first, tentative Canadian investment in 2005, paying C$122 million ($120.8 million) for a 16.7 percent share of the then-private oil sand developer MEG Energy Corp.

It completed a C$2.1 billion acquisition of Opti Canada Ltd in November, winning a second stake in a Canadian oil sands company and a share in Long Lake.

The Canadian deals have not yet stirred the political opposition that killed CNOOC's $18.5 billion Unocal bid.

Still, Canada must review any foreign investments worth more than C$330 million and can block them if it thinks a deal is not in the country's best interests. It exercised that right in 2010 when it blocked Anglo-Australian miner BHP Billiton's $39 billion hostile takeover of Potash Corp, the world's top fertilizer producer.

Canada's industry minister confirmed he will conduct a review, focusing on such aspects as the effect of the deal on economic activity, the degree of participation by Canadians in the business and the impact on competition.

That said, only 28 percent of Nexen's production and 11 percent of its cash flow are derived from Canadian operations, CIBC World Markets analyst Andrew Potter said. That may help CNOOC pass muster with Investment Canada.

In addition, it would be difficult for Harper to quash the deal after touting investment opportunities throughout Asia.

Still, Ottawa must consider the precedent such a pricey deal will set, said Gordon Houlden, head of the University of Alberta's China Institute and a former diplomat in China.

"I do not believe the government would contemplate, let's say, 10 purchases of this order, which would be well within China's means," Houlden said.

"If you (spent) $30 to $50 billion you could take out almost all of the largest Canadian energy companies, and I don't think that it would be the government's plan to have a wholesale transfer of ownership from Canada to China of those assets."

REASONABLE PRICE FOR CNOOC

According to Thomson Reuters data, the takeover would be bigger than any foreign deal completed to date by a Chinese company.

Buying Nexen also would make CNOOC the operator of Buzzard, the largest oil field in the UK and the biggest contributor to Forties Blend crude.

Forties is the largest of the four North Sea crude oils that form the Brent oil benchmark, and the crude that usually sets the value of dated Brent, the benchmark for pricing more than half of the world's oil.

BMO Capital Markets and Citigroup Global Markets Inc advised CNOOC, while Nexen was advised by Goldman Sachs and RBC Capital Markets.

CNOOC said Nexen's debts of about $4.3 billion would remain outstanding and it hoped to complete the deal by the fourth quarter of 2012.
