Photochromic Eyewear Gives Cycle Riders An Increased Freer ...

Motorcycle riders are discovering the freedom of leaving multiple pairs of sunglasses at home and jumping on the open road with one pair of multi-use photocromic motorcycle sunglasses.

Also known as light-adjusting sunglasses, photochromic sunglasses use smart technology that allows you to see clearly in most any light condition, changing color or tint depending on the light availability. So what?s new in photochromic eyewear? For one, they include advanced variable-tint technology so your glasses turn dark fast when you go outside and clear when you go back in. They also are available in 100% ultraviolet (UV) protection and polarization. The materials also come in plastic, regular and lightweight materials and in high-index plastic and polycarbonate.

So how does this cool technology work? There are millions of molecules of substances such as silver chloride and silver halide embedded in the lenses. When there is no UV light, the molecules are invisible. But when photochromic lenses are exposed to UV rays such as in direct sunlight, the molecules go through a chemical process that allows them to change shape. The new shape of the molecules absorbs portions of the visible light allowing the lenses to darken and change colors from gray to brown when exposed to UV light. This coating allows prescription photochromic sunglasses to darken regardless of thickness or lens prescription.

You can purchase photochromic sunglasses with removable foam that is impact resistant and seals out all wind and debris.

If you are on the fence of whether to purchase this type of eyewear or stay with multiple pairs, one disadvantage to consider is that it may take up to two minutes for your lenses to change from light to dark or dark to light. Also, photochromic sunglasses will not darken when you are in a vehicle so not a problem when you are motorcycle riding but it is if you want to use them while driving or riding in a car. One other disadvantage is that the lenses turn very dark when they get cold.

Once you?ve decided on what type of motorcycle eyewear you wish to purchase, be sure that they fit snugly and do not pinch on the bridge of your nose or behind your ears. The higher-priced sunglasses often come in different sizes. When trying on sunglasses, keep them on for a little while since it takes a bit of time to tell if they are too tight. Once you?ve decided on what style you like, consider purchasing from an online eyewear retailer.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama praised the coordinated response to Colorado's wildfires and said trying times bring Americans together.

Obama was in the state Friday for a firsthand look at the damage after he declared the situation a major disaster and promised federal aid. More than 30,000 people have been evacuated in what is now the most destructive wildfire in state history.

"One of the things that happens here in America is when we see our fellow citizens in trouble and having difficulty, we come together as one American family, as one community," Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address.

The federal government has provided firefighters, fire engines, and aircraft, including 19 air tankers to assist in fighting the fires in Colorado and other Western states.

Obama's focus on the Colorado fires came at the end of an eventful week at the White House capped by Thursday's Supreme Court decision upholding Obama's health care law and congressional passage of two Obama priorities ? a highway construction bill and an extension of lower student loan rates.

Obama acknowledged that choosing the fires as the topic of his weekend address was unusual, but said it was an opportunity to focus on the problem facing the people of Colorado.

Obama emphasized the role the federal government was playing in addressing the disaster, a lesson learned from the Bush administration's widely criticized response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

"We're going to continue to make sure that the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Forest Service, our military and National Guard and all the resources that we have available at the federal level are brought to bear in fighting this fire," he said.

Obama's attention to Colorado takes on added significance coming less than five months before the Nov. 6 presidential election. Colorado is an important state in Obama's contest with Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

In the Republican address, Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming took aim at Obama's health care law, arguing that it has not lived up to billing and vowing that Republicans would work to repeal it.

"Each broken promise proves that the Supreme Court's ruling did absolutely nothing to improve the president's failed health care law," he said. "It remains unworkable, unaffordable, and very unpopular."

Barrasso, an orthopedic surgeon, said Obama's signature piece of legislation will not lower the cost of health care.

He cited Chief Justice John Roberts' majority opinion that said the law's requirement to purchase insurance and the penalty it imposed on those who did not was constitutional because it is based on Congress' power to impose a tax.

Burnett, Pirates top Phillies

By ROB MAADDI

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A new catcher didn't affect A.J. Burnett's groove.

Burnett threw 6 2-3 sharp innings to win his eighth straight start, Casey McGehee hit a three-run homer and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 Thursday.

Pedro Alvarez also went deep for Pittsburgh, which split the four-game set in Philadelphia by winning the last two. The surprising Pirates, seeking their first winning season since 1992, are 40-35 and second in the NL central.

Burnett (9-2) allowed three runs and six hits, striking out seven. The winning streak is his longest, and it's the first time a Pirates pitcher has won eight in a row since Dock Ellis in 1974.

Michael McKenry caught Burnett for the first time because starter Rod Barajas is injured.

"I was really impressed with McKenry," Burnett said. "He was outstanding. I can't say enough about him. It was a pleasure to work with him. He picked up where Rod left off."

Joel Hanrahan tossed a scoreless ninth for his 20th save in 22 tries. He retired Hunter Pence on a shallow fly with the tying run on third to end it.

Eric Kratz and Pence hit homers for the Phillies.

The Pirates jumped on Kyle Kendrick (2-8) for five runs before he recorded a second out in the first.

"Gave us a chance to win, pitched deep into the game, which they needed me to," Kendrick said. "We came up short."

Drew Sutton led off with an infield single and Neil Walker walked. One out later, Garrett Jones hit an RBI single. McGehee followed with a three-run shot to left. Alvarez then lined one out to right to make it 5-0.

McGehee has five homers and 15 RBIs in June after driving in just six runs with no homers in the first two months.

"I think at one point I was trying to do too much," McGehee said. "I was with a new team trying to make a good impression. Then I went back to just trying to hit the ball up the middle of the field."

Kratz connected off Burnett in the second to cut it to 5-2.

Burnett retired nine straight before consecutive singles by Shane Victorino and Pence put runners on first and third with one out in the sixth. Placido Polanco's fielder's choice grounder scored Victorino to cut it to 5-3.

Pence led off the bottom of the eighth with a shot off Jason Grilli for his first homer since June 2 and 14th of the year. Pence snapped a 98 at-bat homerless drought.

Grilli pitched out of a jam with two runners on to preserve the lead. He struck out pinch-hitter Jim Thome and retired pinch-hitter Carlos Ruiz on a foul pop. First baseman McGehee made a nice running catch and held onto the ball after stumbling into the first row down the right-field line.

"We got some tough outs from Grilli and Joel," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said.

Kendrick settled down nicely after the awful start. He gave up five runs and six hits in seven innings.

This was Burnett's first appearance in Philadelphia since losing to Cliff Lee and the Phillies in Game 5 of the 2009 World Series. Burnett beat Pedro Martinez in Game 2 that year and the New York Yankees prevented the Phillies from repeating as world champions by taking the Series in six games.

The Phillies finished 5-5 on their longest homestand of the season. The five-time defending NL East champions fell to last place and are 36-42, including 17-24 at home.

NOTES: Phillies designated RHP Chad Qualls for assignment and called up RHP Brian Sanches and LHP Jeremy Horst. ... 1B Ryan Howard is set to start a rehab stint at Class A Lakewood on Thursday night. The 2006 NL MVP hasn't played for the Phillies this season after tearing his left Achilles' tendon last October. ... Burnett is 6-0 on the road. ... The Pirates went back-to-back for the third time this season. ... The Phillies had their 261st straight sellout, including postseason games. ... Lee (0-4, 3.72) tries again for his first win when the Phillies open a three-game series in Miami on Friday night. ... Kevin Correia (3-6, 4.03) starts for the Pirates in St. Louis on Friday.

Home Remodeling 101: Tips on How You can Remodel Your Home ...

Remodeling your home can be an amazing experience. Not only does it give you fulfillment in expressing your creative self, but it also hones your quest for design quality. You may find home remodeling a bit daunting at first, but the important thing is to keep composed through the planning and decision-making and not get overwhelmed by all the choices. To get you past the initial hurdle, here are essential tips on how you can remodel your home like a pro.

Know the extent of the renovation From the beginning, know the scale of the renovation project you're going to undertake. A minor renovation would just involve paint job on the exterior or interior component of your home, installation of wallpaper, decors and appliances. While a major one includes total strip down of the kitchen space, living area, bedroom, or bathroom area (I.e. walls, floorings, appliances, furnishings, etc.) and the installation of newer components.

List every home detail that needs remodeling If you're remodeling a huge part of your home, say a kitchen, you need to list down every detail that needs remodeling. Decide if you need a new flooring installation, appliances, cupboards or kitchen furnishings. Don't forget about the aesthetic value of space; it's just as essential as the objects or installations that occupy it. If you don't take context into view, you're bound to fret over every last detail which could make you into an impossible perfectionist.

Consider a contractor When planning for Omaha home improvement, consider the services of a contractor even if you have prior experience in home remodeling. Unless you are a true home building DIY hobbyist, the odds of doing a fair, clean job of dismantling, refurbishing, painting, and putting things back together, may not be in your favor. You'll need the help of a highly skilled and knowledgeable contractor to ensure that the task gets the quality service you require.

Organize well If you're going to be your own general contractor for the Omaha remodeling, make sure to keep everything organized. You don't want to be all over the place once the construction starts, so keep an expandable folder where you have a list of all the remodel itineraries. Have a separate file for the plumbing, electricity, kitchen or bathroom plans.

Know the entire remodel's worth As you know, home remodeling can be quite extravagant. It's not only the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or Omaha roofing components you're going to finance, you also need to pay your contractors, too. By allocating a fixed budget for home remodelling and the contractor's salary, you keep a tight rein on your budget and not run into excess fees later on.
